—
Mara and Chibi stood on a hill above the conquered city.
Victory banners flew from the towers.
The gates were broken.
The bells were ringing.
People were cheering.
People were crying.
And prisoners were being led away in chains.
—
**Mara:**
“They won.”
—
**Chibi:**
“Yes.”
—
She looked towards the city.
—
**Mara:**
“Then why doesn’t it look like winning?”
—
Chibi said nothing.
—
Below them…
one man raised his hand.
Thousands fell silent.
—
**Mara:**
“They all listen to him.”
—
**Chibi:**
“Yes.”
—
**Mara:**
“He could tell them anything.”
—
**Chibi:**
“Probably.”
—
Mara frowned.
—
**Mara:**
“That’s scary.”
—
**Chibi:**
“Why?”
—
She thought.
—
**Mara:**
“Because if everyone follows him…”
—
“…then the only person who can stop him…”
—
“…is him.”
—
Chibi smiled faintly.
—
**Chibi:**
“That’s very good.”
—
Mara looked down at the path beneath their feet.
Hundreds of tiny footprints led up the hill.
—
**Mara:**
“Do you think people become bad all at once?”
—
Chibi took one very small step.
—
**Chibi:**
“Maybe like this.”
—
Mara stared.
—
**Mara:**
“That’s nothing.”
—
**Chibi:**
“Exactly.”
—
He took another.
—
**Mara:**
“Still nothing.”
—
Another.
—
**Mara:**
“You’re just walking.”
—
**Chibi:**
“Yes.”
—
Another.
Another.
Another.
—
Mara looked back.
Chibi was now several metres away.
—
**Mara:**
“Oh.”
—
He stopped.
—
**Mara:**
“But none of those steps looked important.”
—
**Chibi:**
“That’s the problem.”
—
Mara walked towards him.
—
**Mara:**
“So which one was the bad step?”
—
Chibi looked back at his footprints.
—
**Chibi:**
“I don’t know.”
—
**Mara:**
“There has to be one.”
—
**Chibi:**
“Maybe none of them.”
—
She frowned.
—
**Chibi:**
“Maybe all of them.”
—
Silence.
—
Mara looked towards the city.
—
**Mara:**
“The Orc still says it’s about winning.”
—
**Chibi:**
“Yes.”
—
**Mara:**
“The Dwarf still says it’s about the hold.”
—
**Chibi:**
“Yes.”
—
**Mara:**
“The priest still says it’s about his god.”
—
**Chibi:**
“Yes.”
—
**Mara:**
“And the warrior still says it’s about protecting everyone.”
—
**Chibi:**
“Yes.”
—
Mara became quiet.
—
**Mara:**
“So they can keep saying the same thing…”
—
“…while becoming someone completely different.”
—
**Chibi:**
“Looks that way.”
—
The bells rang again.
—
**Mara:**
“Then how do you know when to stop?”
—
Chibi looked at her.
—
**Chibi:**
“Maybe when something matters more…”
—
“…than letting your fire win.”
—
Mara looked back towards the city.
—
**Mara:**
“But what if the fire is meant to protect that thing?”
—
For once…
Chibi had no answer.
—
A long silence.
—
Then the clouds above the city shifted.
For just a heartbeat…
four strange shapes seemed to form within them.
Not clear enough to name.
Only clear enough to notice.
—
**Mara:**
“Are they waiting?”
—
**Chibi:**
“Maybe.”
—
**Mara:**
“For what?”
—
Chibi looked at the tiny footprints behind him.
—
**Chibi:**
“For one more step.”
—
Mara turned towards us.
—
**Mara:**
“It’s easy to say we’d stop.”
—
Chibi looked towards us too.
—
**Chibi:**
“Easy when it isn’t our victory.”
—
**Mara:**
“Our family.”
—
**Chibi:**
“Our people.”
—
**Mara:**
“Our fear.”
—
**Chibi:**
“Our fire.”
—
A long silence.
—
# If everything you loved depended on you taking one more step…
—
# And everyone around you told you it was the right thing to do…
—
Mara looked directly at us.
—
# Would you still know when to stop?
