STACY:
“I think we keep making the wrong assumption.”
CAELWYN:
“Which one?”
STACY:
“That forbidden power has to deceive you.”
CAELWYN:
“It doesn’t?”
STACY:
“Why should it?”
She points toward the dark vial on the table.
STACY:
“The ghoul drinks vitae and becomes stronger.”
CAELWYN:
“Yes.”
STACY:
“The diablerist consumes another vampire and may gain power.”
CAELWYN:
“Yes.”
STACY:
“The desperate wraith accepts the Shadow’s help and gets the extra dice.”
CAELWYN:
“Yes.”
STACY:
“The changeling Ravages because Glamour is needed now, not tomorrow.”
CAELWYN:
“Yes.”
STACY:
“The Garou accepts power that should never have been touched because the caern will fall without it.”
CAELWYN:
“Yes.”
STACY:
“So where is the deception?”
Caelwyn looks at the blue flame between them.
CAELWYN:
“There isn’t one.”
STACY:
“Exactly.”
A long silence.
STACY:
“The power works.”
CAELWYN:
“And that is why you take it.”
STACY:
“Not because you are stupid.”
CAELWYN:
“Not necessarily because you are evil.”
STACY:
“Sometimes because someone will die if you don’t.”
CAELWYN:
“And afterward?”
STACY:
“You survived.”
CAELWYN:
“You saved them.”
STACY:
“The world didn’t end.”
CAELWYN:
“So when the next impossible choice arrives…”
Stacy looks at him.
STACY:
“…you already have evidence that the forbidden thing works.”
Caelwyn nods.
CAELWYN:
“That is Borrowed Fire.”
STACY:
“Not power that betrays you by failing.”
CAELWYN:
“Power that betrays you by succeeding.”
STACY:
“Because success gives you something corruption could never give you on its own.”
CAELWYN:
“An argument.”
STACY:
“For doing it again.”
She turns toward us.
STACY:
“So forget the vampire. Forget the mage. Forget the werewolf.”
CAELWYN:
“Imagine only this.”
STACY:
“Someone you love will die.”
CAELWYN:
“And something you should never touch can save them.”
STACY:
“It will work.”
CAELWYN:
“But you know there will be a price.”
STACY:
“Would you take it?”
Caelwyn waits a moment.
CAELWYN:
“And after it saved them…”
STACY:
“…what would stop you from taking it again?”

MYTHVEIL NOTE
“Borrowed Fire” is a Mythveil Chronicles interpretive framework. It compares recurring themes and mechanics across different World of Darkness game lines; it is not presented as an official World of Darkness metaphysical category.
Our discussion is written with deep respect for the writers, designers, artists, developers, and communities — from the original White Wolf era to the creators carrying the World of Darkness forward today — whose work made these questions possible.
