Thousands of soldiers stood beneath a grey sky.
Exhausted.
Hungry.
Afraid.
Across the valley…
another army waited.
Stacy:
“They won’t fight.”
Caelwyn:
“They might.”
Stacy:
“They’re terrified.”
Caelwyn:
“Fear isn’t the opposite of courage.”
A horn sounded.
One rider appeared before the army.
One person.
One horse.
One banner.
Stacy:
“What’s he going to do?”
Caelwyn:
“Watch.”
The rider began to speak.
No spell.
No miracle.
The enemy did not disappear.
The wounded remained wounded.
The frightened remained frightened.
And yet…
one soldier lifted his head.
Then another.
A spear struck a shield.
Once.
Twice.
Then a hundred answered.
Then a thousand.
Stacy:
“They can barely hear him.”
Caelwyn:
“They don’t need to anymore.”
Stacy:
“Why?”
Caelwyn watched the sound spread through the ranks.
Caelwyn:
“Because now…”
“…they hear each other.”
Thousands of voices became one.
Stacy:
“Zeal.”
Caelwyn:
“Yes.”
Stacy:
“He gave them courage.”
Caelwyn shook his head.
Caelwyn:
“No.”
“The courage was already there.”
“The boy wants to survive.”
“The mother wants to protect her family.”
“The priest believes in Sigmar.”
“The veteran refuses to abandon the soldier beside him.”
“Thousands of people.”
“Thousands of reasons.”
“Thousands of fires.”
Stacy:
“Then what did the leader give them?”
Caelwyn watched every banner rise.
Caelwyn:
“One reason…”
“…for all of them…”
“…to burn together.”
The army roared.
Stacy:
“Can one fire really ignite thousands?”
Caelwyn:
“Yes.”
Then…
another horn sounded.
Across the valley.
Stacy turned.
A second figure had appeared before the opposing army.
Another banner rose.
Then another.
Then thousands.
Their voices began to thunder across the valley.
Stacy:
“They have one too.”
Caelwyn:
“Of course.”
Stacy:
“Their own leader.”
Caelwyn:
“Their own purpose.”
She watched both armies.
Two peoples.
Two banners.
Two shared dreams.
The same fire.
Stacy:
“Then the Inner Fire doesn’t know who’s right.”
Caelwyn:
“No.”
A long silence.
Stacy:
“So what happens…”
“…when thousands of people burn for the same thing?”
The first army began marching.
Caelwyn:
“Sometimes…”
“…they save the world.”
The second army began marching too.
Caelwyn:
“And sometimes…”
“…they become the reason…”
“…it needs saving.”
