“It’s too old.”

“Replace it.”

The old watchmaker opens the case.

Inside,

a simple engraving.

Come home safely.

1944.

He quietly closes the watch.

“I won’t replace it.”

“I’ll repair it.”

The businessman frowns.

“A new one would work better.”

The old craftsman smiles gently.

“So would a new memory.”

Silence.

Outside,

the loudspeaker announces another sale.

TRADE IN THE OLD.

WELCOME THE FUTURE.

Sean looks around the workshop.

Dozens of clocks tick.

None agree with one another.

Sean:

“Which one tells the right time?”

The old watchmaker adjusts another tiny gear.

“They all do.”

“They simply began…”

“…at different moments.”

Evening falls.

The department store blazes with electric light.

The old craftsman lights a single oil lamp.

Sean watches both lights.

Sean:

“His lamp won’t outshine theirs.”

Eljara looks at the tiny flame.

Then quietly says:

“It doesn’t have to.”

“It only has to keep burning.”
