Mara:
Chibi…
Can I ask you something?
Chibi:
You always can.
Mara:
Why do grandparents tell stories?
Not books.
Not lessons.
Stories.
Chibi:
Because stories are easier to remember.
Mara:
No…
I don’t think that’s it.
Chibi:
Then what do you think?
Mara:
When I was little…
my grandfather told me stories before I went to sleep.
Some were true.
Some probably weren’t.
I don’t even remember all of them anymore.
But…
I remember how they made me feel.
Safe.
Curious.
Brave.
Chibi:
Exactly.
You forgot many of the words.
You never forgot the fire.
Mara:
The fire?
Chibi:
That’s what stories really are.
Little flames.
One person carries them for a while…
then passes them to someone else.
Mara:
So that’s why people keep telling the same myths?
Chibi:
Think about it.
Prometheus.
The Phoenix.
King Arthur.
Robin Hood.
Momotarō.
Every culture has different heroes.
But somehow…
their stories never disappear.
Mara:
Because someone always tells them again.
Chibi:
Exactly.
Stories don’t survive because they’re old.
They survive because someone decides they still matter.
Mara:
Then maybe stories aren’t about the past at all.
Chibi:
No.
They’re gifts for the future.
Mara:
That sounds beautiful.
Chibi:
It also makes storytellers dangerous.
Mara:
Dangerous?
Chibi:
A sword can change one life.
A story can change generations.
A child hears one story…
grows up believing kindness matters…
and spends an entire lifetime proving it.
Or hears a story about fear…
and carries that instead.
Stories become the fire people live by.
Mara:
So every person leaves something behind.
Even if it’s only one story.
Chibi:
Especially then.
Most of us won’t build castles.
Most of us won’t become kings.
Most of us won’t change history.
But every single one of us…
will become part of somebody else’s story.
Mara:
That sounds like the World of Darkness.
Chibi:
It is.
People think a chronicle ends when the last session is over.
It doesn’t.
Years later…
players still remember impossible choices.
The people they saved.
The friends they lost.
The promises they kept.
Those stories become part of them.
Mara:
Just like the stories our grandparents told us.
Chibi:
Exactly.
Dice are forgotten.
Character sheets disappear.
Even worlds eventually fade.
But a story that truly reaches someone’s heart…
keeps burning.
Sometimes…
for an entire lifetime.
Mara:
Maybe that was the real gift of fire.
Not that it gave us light…
Chibi:
…but that it allowed one generation…
to leave a light…
for the next.
