The Forgotten Name — Mara and Chibi at a weathered grave in the Old World

At the edge of the village…

the oldest graves had no visitors.

No flowers.

No candles.

Only moss.

Mara:
“Nobody comes here anymore.”

Chibi:
“No.”

She knelt beside a weathered gravestone.

Almost every letter had disappeared.

Only one word remained.

REMEMBER

Silence.

Mara:
“Who was buried here?”

Chibi slowly shook his head.

Chibi:
“I don’t know.”

She looked surprised.

Mara:
“You don’t?”

For the first time…

there was sadness in his eyes.

Chibi:
“No.”

The wind whispered through the ancient yew trees.

Mara:
“Then I suppose it doesn’t matter anymore.”

Chibi looked at the faded stone.

Chibi:
“May I ask you something?”

Mara:
“Always.”

Chibi:
“What happens…”

A pause.

Chibi:
“…when the last person forgets your name?”

She thought for a long moment.

Mara:
“Then you’re truly gone.”

The boy nodded.

Chibi:
“Perhaps.”

Far away…

the village bell should have rung.

It didn’t.

Instead…

a flock of ravens rose from the forest.

Mara:
“That keeps happening.”

Chibi:
“Yes.”

She looked toward the dark trees.

Mara:
“Do you think something is waking up?”

He remained silent.

At the forgotten grave…

a single fresh white flower now rested on the stone.

Neither of them had seen anyone place it there.

Mara:
“Who brought that?”

Chibi:
“I don’t know.”

She stared at him.

Mara:
“Again…”

“…you don’t know.”

He lowered his eyes.

Chibi:
“That frightens me.”

The wind turned the page of an old prayer book lying beside the grave.

No hand touched it.

Mara:
“So this is how the End Times begin.”

Chibi slowly shook his head.

Chibi:
“No.”

Mara:
“No?”

He gently brushed the moss away from the word REMEMBER.

Chibi:
“The End Times don’t begin…”

A long silence.

Chibi:
“…when the old horrors return.”

The ravens vanished into the dark forest.

Chibi:
“They begin…”

He looked once more at the forgotten grave.

Chibi:
“…when no one remembers the names…”

Another pause.

Chibi:
“…of those who once knew how to keep them asleep.”
