The village bell had rung every autumn…
for longer than anyone could remember.
Then a new mayor removed the rope.
Mayor:
“It serves no purpose.”
Nobody argued.
It was only tradition.
That evening…
Stacy looked up at the silent bell tower.
Stacy:
“Why is everyone staring at it?”
Caelwyn:
“They’re waiting.”
She frowned.
Stacy:
“For what?”
He didn’t answer.
An old woman stopped beneath the tower.
She looked up.
Made the sign of Sigmar.
Then quietly went home.
Stacy:
“Does she know something?”
Caelwyn:
“She remembers something.”
The wind carried dead leaves across the empty square.
Stacy:
“What was the bell for?”
Caelwyn looked at the weathered bronze.
Caelwyn:
“No one remembers.”
She smiled.
Stacy:
“Then perhaps it was never important.”
For the first time—
he looked genuinely worried.
Caelwyn:
“Or perhaps…”
A pause.
Caelwyn:
“…it was so important…”
“…that everyone assumed someone else would always remember.”
Night fell.
The village grew silent.
Far beyond the fields…
ravens rose into the sky.
All at once.
Then…
from somewhere deep within the forest…
a single bell rang.
Once.
Only once.
Stacy:
“There isn’t another village out there.”
Caelwyn:
“No.”
Silence.
The old bell above them never answered.
Its rope had long since been removed.
Stacy:
“So this is the price of forgetting.”
Caelwyn slowly shook his head.
Caelwyn:
“No.”
Stacy:
“No?”
He kept his eyes on the dark forest.
Caelwyn:
“The price isn’t that old horrors return.”
A long silence.
Caelwyn:
“It’s that…”
The distant bell rang again.
Caelwyn:
“…no one remembers what kept them away.”

Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 4th Edition
Sometimes traditions survive because no one remembers their purpose.
Sometimes that purpose was the only thing standing between a village…
…and whatever waited patiently in the dark.
If you remember what this felt like—
you already know what you’re missing.
Step back into it.
Or keep missing it.
