Which way is the face turned?
The drums change before the lights go out.
Sean feels it in his ribs.
Not louder.
Closer.
The power dies along the pier in a single sweep. Lanterns flicker — one stays lit at the far end.
Masks step into that light.
Carved wood. Deep grooves. Eyes hollowed through.
They are not facing the crowd.
They are facing the sea.

Storm ritual?
Eljara
No.
One mask stands inside a circle of oil lamps.
This one faces inward.
Toward the town.
The wind pulls sharply down the pier.
Not weather.
Pressure.
A man at the outer ring lifts his mask to breathe.
The gust slams into him.
Sean shoves it back into place.
The pressure eases.
Not gone.
Reduced.
Eljara studies the inner mask.

Same structure.
Sean
Different direction.
The flames lean toward the open mouth.
Not decorative.
Hollowed too deep.
The pull grows stronger.
Eljara
It’s not the carving.
She grips the mask stand.
Turns it.
Ten degrees.
The wind falters.
Fifteen.
The flames straighten.
Sean grabs it and twists it fully.
Now the open mouth faces the sea.
The outer masked figures adjust instinctively.
The pressure snaps outward.
A low roll across dark water.
Then silence.
The villagers remove their masks slowly.
Not relieved.
Corrected.
Sean looks at Eljara.
Sean
Shield or signal.
She doesn’t smile.
Eljara
Depends which way you point it.
The wind does not return.
But the pier no longer feels neutral.
