If you turn it the wrong way…
The grown-ups say it’s for the wind.
Mara doesn’t believe them.
The masks are heavier tonight.
Not paper. Not painted smiles.
Wood.
Serious wood.
A circle forms in the square.
Adults facing outward — toward the sea.
In the middle, a single mask stands upright on a crate.
Its mouth is carved open wide.
Too wide.
Mara
That one isn’t for wearing.
Chibi
No. That one’s for pointing.
The air feels tight.
Not storm-tight.
Listening-tight.
A gust slides through the square.
The central mask shifts.
Just a little.
Now its open mouth faces the houses.
The wind pulls inward.
Mara feels it first — like someone whispering her name from very far away.
Mara
It’s looking the wrong way.
Chibi nods.
One adult steps back.
The ring opens for a heartbeat.
The pull sharpens.
Mara runs.
Chibi runs with her.
They reach the crate before anyone stops them.
The mask is heavier than it looks.
Chibi
Turn it.
Mara
Which way?
Chibi
Out.
They twist together.
The open mouth swings back toward the sea.
The pressure snaps outward.
A low roll across dark water.
Then nothing.
The wind relaxes.
The adults close the ring again.
No one thanks them.
No one scolds them.
Later, sitting on the steps—
Mara
I thought it was pretending.
Chibi
Pretending works. Until it doesn’t.
She leans against him.
Mara
What’s the rule?
Chibi looks toward the ocean.
Chibi
If you wear it…
know what it’s facing.
The square is quiet again.
But it no longer feels neutral.
