❄️ The Old World: The Greatest Darkness Before the Light Comes (Mythveil Chronicles – Winter Field Notes, Part III)

The darkest night in the Old World
does not fall with winter.
It falls
when the last hearth-fire surrenders.

Not a cold night.
A watchful one —
a pause in which even the gods seem to hold their breath.

The Imperial Calendar marks Midwinter.
The priests speak of patience, trial, faith.
But the people have another name for it:

The Long Dark.

The one night
when the winds go still,
the wolves fall silent,
and the frost grows thick enough
to mirror the stars.

In the fishing hovels of Nordland,
families place jars filled with bits of glowing river-amber on their windowsills
and call them waiting lights.
Most dim long before dawn.

In the farmsteads of Middenland,
children tie scraps of red cloth to pine branches
and hang them outside their doors —
fragile wards
meant to draw the gaze of Hearth Spirits
and keep away whatever walks the forests
when even Ulric’s breath freezes.

No one tells them it may not matter.
Hope is cheaper than firewood.
And both burn quickly.

And the dwarfs?
Aye, they feel it too —
a shift in the deep stone,
a tremor in ancient halls
as the mountains tighten under winter’s grip.
Some dwarfs claim
that on the Long Dark,
the ancestors walk unseen,
checking whose forge still burns.

There is an old legend in the Reik villages:

“On the Long Dark,
a single wandering light seeks the one
who needs it most.”

Something lost.
Something wounded.
Something nearly forgotten.

No one agrees on what the light is.
A lantern borne by Taal’s spirits.
A torch carried by a wandering knight.
A shard of Hysh breaking through the chill.
Or maybe —
the last mercy the Old World remembers.

Up in the keeps of the nobility,
the highborn drink spiced wine
and speak of the coming dawn
as if dawn were guaranteed.
From their towers, the world seems peaceful.

But peace doesn’t reach the ground.

Down here,
where frost clings to the bones of fishermen
and breath hangs heavy in the barns of the poor,
people look toward the treeline,
toward the Reik,
toward whatever horizon hasn’t been swallowed yet,
and wait for a glow
that may never come.

And some nights,
a lone torch moves along the road,
slow, steady, deliberate —
a lantern held by someone
who refuses to bow to the dark.

Someone nearby murmurs:

“Someone still keeps watch.
Even now.
Even here.”

The darkest night in the Old World
is not the absence of light.
It is the moment
before someone dares to believe
light could return.

And the coming of that light?
It isn’t salvation.
It’s a question:

“If dawn reaches you…
what will you do with it?”
