surrounded by parts that should not fit together.

Cog-teeth.
A lens that hums softly
like it’s trying to remember a face.
He’s holding a book made of cold metal plates,
its spine etched with red sigils
that glow only when no one looks directly at them.
The title pulses once:

Mara wrinkles her nose.
“Chibi… why does that book sound like breathing?”
Chibi doesn’t look up.
“It’s not breathing,” he says.
“It’s… calculating.”
The pages don’t turn.
They unlock.
Symbols crawl across the surface in clean, angular lines.
Binary prayers.
Rites written for hands that no longer exist.
Mara leans closer.
She hears it then —
a whisper made of clicks and static,
layered voices chanting in perfect synchrony.
FLESH IS FALLIBLE.
A diagram forms in glowing red ink:
a human figure,
opened, replaced, perfected.
Metal bones.
Lenses where eyes once were.
A heart redesigned to never hesitate.
Chibi swallows.
“They don’t worship machines,” he says quietly.
“They worship what survives when flesh fails.”
Another page activates.
Forge worlds bloom across the parchment —
planets choking on smog,
cathedrals of steel,
Tech-Priests kneeling before engines older than memory.
The book grows warm.
Not heat.
Approval.
Mara grips Chibi’s sleeve.
“Why does it feel like it’s… waiting?”
Chibi finally looks at her.
“Because the Omnissiah doesn’t ask if you believe,” he says.
“It asks when you’re ready to replace the part of you that doubts.”
The lens on the floor clicks.
Once.
Twice.
It focuses.
On them.
The book snaps shut on its own.
The humming stops.
But somewhere in the walls,
a machine answers back.
