Time Without Tide · Spooky October · Week 4 · The Age That Should Never Have Come

Explore the world of Time Without Tide:
SEAN: “Please tell me we’re not summoning a demon.”
ELJARA: “We’re examining a reconstruction of a ceremonial magic chamber.”
SEAN: “That isn’t what I asked.”
ELJARA: “No, Sean. We’re not summoning anything.”
SEAN: “Good. Then why is there a sword?”
ELJARA: “Because ritual implements could have symbolic functions in Western ceremonial magic.”
SEAN: “Does the sword know it’s symbolic?”
Eljara opens a notebook.
ELJARA: “The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn was founded in Britain in 1888. Its members studied ceremonial magic, Hermeticism, alchemy, astrology, and various esoteric traditions.”
SEAN: “Secret meetings, strange symbols, complicated ceremonies?”
ELJARA: “Among other things. But they weren’t simply people trying to summon demons. Many regarded their practices as forms of spiritual development.”
SEAN: “And Aleister Crowley?”
ELJARA: “He joined the Golden Dawn in 1898. In 1904, he claimed to receive a revelation from an intelligence called Aiwass.”
SEAN: “What did it tell him?”
ELJARA: “The resulting Book of the Law became central to Thelema. Crowley interpreted it as announcing a new spiritual era: the Aeon of Horus.”
SEAN: “A new age. Interesting.”
ELJARA: “Meanwhile, the Theosophical Society, founded in 1875, explored elaborate ideas about cosmic evolution and recurring stages of existence.”
SEAN: “And Rudolf Steiner?”
ELJARA: “He later developed Anthroposophy, with its own understanding of spiritual evolution and human consciousness. These were different teachings, not one unified occult religion.”
SEAN: “But they all raise an intriguing question.”
ELJARA: “Which one?”
SEAN: “What if the world really does pass through different ages?”
Eljara unfolds a map of Saltport.
ELJARA: “In Time Without Tide, the Age of Decadence ended. The moon fell. The Unknown arrived.”
SEAN: “What if some people had recognised the signs?”
ELJARA: “They might have tried to warn others.”
SEAN: “Or studied the changes.”
ELJARA: “Or developed theories about what came next.”
SEAN: “And what if someone decided the next age should arrive sooner?”
Eljara studies him.
ELJARA: “Now we’re moving from prophecy to intervention.”
SEAN: “Imagine finding an ancient chamber with unfamiliar instruments. A warning says not to complete a sequence.”
ELJARA: “An instruction left by people who understood the danger.”
SEAN: “Unless someone reads it differently.”
ELJARA: “As a procedure?”
SEAN: “As a ritual.”
ELJARA: “We have no evidence that occult rituals caused the catastrophe in Time Without Tide.”
SEAN: “I know. It’s a theory.”
ELJARA: “A disturbing one.”
SEAN: “Especially if the people involved believed they were saving the world.”
ELJARA: “Or leading humanity into a better age.”
Sean looks at the ceremonial circle.
SEAN: “So perhaps nobody intended to destroy the old world.”
ELJARA: “Perhaps they simply wanted to open the next one.”
SEAN: “And discovered too late that some doors cannot be closed.”
A candle goes out.
SEAN: “Tell me that was a draught.”
ELJARA: “Probably.”
SEAN: “Probably?”
Eljara closes the notebook.
ELJARA: “There’s something worse than a warning nobody understands.”
SEAN: “What?”
ELJARA: “A warning deliberately written to look like an invitation.”
Sean quietly picks up the sword.
