THE DEVIL KEEPS HIS PROMISE — World of Darkness · Month 9 · Week 4 · Temptation

Sean and Eljara studying an ordinary handwritten contract at a wooden table late in the evening.

MONTH 9 — THE MONTH OF ABUNDANCE
WEEK 4 — TEMPTATION
SHORTFORM II — EVENT
WORLD OF DARKNESS

THE DEVIL KEEPS HIS PROMISE

Sean expected the contract to look more impressive.

Black parchment.

Blood.

A seal with too many teeth.

Instead, it was cream paper, brown ink, three short paragraphs.

SEAN:
That’s it?

ELJARA:
What were you hoping for?

SEAN:
A little sulphur. Maybe a goat.

ELJARA:
You’d be terrible at procurement.

Sean looks at the page again.

SEAN:
All right. What’s the bargain?

ELJARA:
A child is dying.

SEAN:
That’s cheerful.

ELJARA:
The doctors have failed. Prayer has failed. Money has failed. Everyone else has gone home.

SEAN:
And then something comes to the mother.

ELJARA:
And says, “I can save him.”

Sean’s expression changes.

SEAN:
What does it want?

ELJARA:
There.

SEAN:
What?

ELJARA:
You’re bargaining already.

The first price is small.

A promise.

A candle once a week.

A favour owed later.

Something that seems almost absurd beside a child’s life.

SEAN:
And the child lives?

ELJARA:
Completely.

SEAN:
No trick?

ELJARA:
No trick.

He leans back.

SEAN:
That’s worse.

ELJARA:
Much worse.

Because now she has learned something.

It works.

In Devil’s Due and Demon: The Fallen, dangerous powers can offer real benefits. A bargain can genuinely solve a problem while creating a relationship that grows harder to escape.

SEAN:
So the second conversation is different.

ELJARA:
Entirely.

SEAN:
Because now she has proof.

ELJARA:
And a living child.

Years later, her husband is dying.

This time she does not wait for the thing to find her.

She calls it.

SEAN:
The price goes up.

ELJARA:
Of course.

SEAN:
And she knows it’s wrong.

ELJARA:
Perhaps.

SEAN:
And says yes anyway.

ELJARA:
Perhaps.

SEAN:
Because the first time taught her that yes can save someone.

Eljara turns the page.

SEAN:
When does the bargain become corruption?

ELJARA:
When would you say?

SEAN:
First deal?

ELJARA:
Maybe.

SEAN:
Second?

ELJARA:
Maybe.

SEAN:
That isn’t helpful.

ELJARA:
Then ask a better question.

Sean thinks.

SEAN:
What changes each time?

ELJARA:
Exactly.

SEAN:
What she’s willing to pay.

ELJARA:
Yes.

SEAN:
What she considers normal.

ELJARA:
Yes.

SEAN:
Who she thinks may pay the price.

ELJARA:
Yes.

SEAN:
And whether she can still imagine living without the miracle.

Eljara nods.

That is where temptation becomes more dangerous than a lie.

A liar offers false hope.

A successful corrupter can offer evidence.

It helped me.

It saved him.

It worked before.

Why not again?

SEAN:
And then she starts telling other people.

ELJARA:
Maybe not because she wants to damn them.

SEAN:
But because she knows the thing can help.

ELJARA:
Exactly.

SEAN:
So the bargain becomes a mission.

ELJARA:
Sometimes.

In Infernalism, not every fallen person is portrayed as a fool. Some understand the horror and still choose what they believe gives them freedom, revenge, knowledge, power or their only chance.

SEAN:
So eventually some of them know.

ELJARA:
Yes.

SEAN:
And responsibility still matters.

ELJARA:
Very much.

SEAN:
But that doesn’t mean the attraction was fake.

ELJARA:
No.

Sean looks back at the contract.

SEAN:
One more version.

ELJARA:
Go on.

SEAN:
No dying child.

ELJARA:
No desperate husband?

SEAN:
No emergency at all.

He writes one line.

The thing comes back and asks:

Do you want to feel it again?

Eljara reads it.

ELJARA:
The miracle?

SEAN:
The certainty.

ELJARA:
The gratitude?

SEAN:
Maybe.

ELJARA:
The feeling of being the one person in the room who can make the impossible happen?

Sean stops writing.

SEAN:
That.

Now nobody needs saving.

Nothing terrible happens if she says no.

But she remembers the moment the impossible obeyed.

SEAN:
Then she may finally know this isn’t about saving anyone.

ELJARA:
Yes.

SEAN:
And still want it.

ELJARA:
Yes.

SEAN:
What does the demon offer now?

Eljara folds the contract.

ELJARA:
Nothing new.

She puts it in front of him.

ELJARA:
It only asks whether she wants another miracle.

Sean stares at the page.

SEAN:
That’s the end of abundance.

ELJARA:
No.

SEAN:
No?

ELJARA:
That’s what happens when abundance loses its ending.

SEAN:
Meaning?

ELJARA:
Receiving something wonderful is not the problem.

She taps the contract.

ELJARA:
The problem begins when you can no longer say:

“That was enough.”

MYTHVEIL QUESTION

If a forbidden bargain genuinely saved someone you loved, would knowing the price be enough to stop you from making the same bargain again?

MYTHVEIL NOTE

The contract and family in this dialogue are an original Mythveil thought experiment.

The underlying comparison draws on distinct World of Darkness sources in which infernal bargains, Faith, recruitment and dependence can provide genuine benefits while also creating escalating costs, obligations and opportunities for exploitation.

These systems are not one universal corruption mechanism. The point is narrower: a dangerous offer may become more persuasive because it works.

Sean and Eljara remain external observers throughout.

Written with respect for the writers, designers, artists and communities whose work makes these questions possible.

Monat 9 — Der Monat der Fülle · Woche 4 — Versuchung · Kurzfassung II — Ereignis · World of Darkness
BODY:

SEAN:
Das ist alles?

ELJARA:
Was hattest du erwartet?

SEAN:
Ein bisschen Schwefel. Vielleicht eine Ziege.

ELJARA:
Du wärst grauenhaft im Einkauf.

Sean sieht wieder auf das Blatt.

SEAN:
Also gut. Was ist der Handel?

ELJARA:
Ein Kind stirbt.

SEAN:
Heiter.

ELJARA:
Die Ärzte können nichts mehr tun. Gebete haben nichts gebracht. Geld auch nicht. Alle anderen sind längst nach Hause gegangen.

SEAN:
Und dann kommt etwas zu seiner Mutter.

ELJARA:
Und sagt: „Ich kann ihn retten.“

Seans Gesicht verändert sich.

SEAN:
Was will es dafür?

ELJARA:
Da.

SEAN:
Was?

ELJARA:

SEAN:
Und das Kind wird gesund?

ELJARA:
Vollständig.

SEAN:
Kein Trick?

ELJARA:
Keiner.

Er lehnt sich zurück.

SEAN:
Das ist schlimmer.

ELJARA:
Viel schlimmer.

SEAN:
Wann wird aus dem Handel Korruption?

ELJARA:
Wann würdest du sagen?

SEAN:
Beim ersten Mal?

ELJARA:
Vielleicht.

SEAN:
Beim zweiten?

ELJARA:
Vielleicht.

SEAN:
Sehr hilfreich.

ELJARA:
Dann stell eine bessere Frage.

Sean überlegt.

SEAN:
Was verändert sich jedes Mal?

ELJARA:
Genau.

SEAN:
Was sie zu zahlen bereit ist.

ELJARA:
Ja.

SEAN:
Was sie für normal hält.

ELJARA:
Ja.

SEAN:

Eljara nickt.

Hier wird Versuchung gefährlicher als eine Lüge.

Ein Lügner bietet falsche Hoffnung.

Ein erfolgreicher Verführer kann Beweise liefern.

Es hat mir geholfen.

Es hat ihn gerettet.

Es hat schon einmal funktioniert.

Warum nicht noch einmal?

SEAN:
Und irgendwann erzählt sie es anderen.

ELJARA:
Vielleicht nicht, weil sie sie verdammen will.

SEAN:

SEAN:
Also wissen manche irgendwann genau, was sie gewählt haben.

ELJARA:
Ja.

SEAN:
Und Verantwortung bleibt Verantwortung.

ELJARA:
Unbedingt.

SEAN:

ELJARA:
Ja.

SEAN:
Und will es trotzdem.

ELJARA:
Ja.

SEAN:
Was bietet der Dämon jetzt an?

Eljara faltet den Vertrag.

ELJARA:
Nichts Neues.

Sie legt ihn vor Sean.

ELJARA:

SEAN:
Was meinst du?

ELJARA:

Pergamena nera.

Sangue.

Un sigillo con qualche dente di troppo.

Invece, davanti a lui c’erano carta color crema, inchiostro marrone e tre brevi paragrafi.

SEAN:
Tutto qui?

ELJARA:
Che cosa speravi di trovare?

SEAN:
Un po’ di zolfo. Magari una capra.

ELJARA:
Saresti terribile negli acquisti.

Sean torna a guardare il foglio.

SEAN:
Va bene. Qual è il patto?

ELJARA:
Un bambino sta morendo.

SEAN:
Che allegria.

ELJARA:

SEAN:
E il bambino guarisce?

ELJARA:
Completamente.

SEAN:
Nessun trucco?

ELJARA:
Nessuno.

Lui si appoggia allo schienale.

SEAN:
È peggio.

ELJARA:
Molto peggio.

Perché ora lei ha imparato qualcosa.

Funziona.

In Devil’s Due e Demon: The Fallen, poteri pericolosi possono concedere benefici reali.

SEAN:
E poi comincia a raccontarlo agli altri.

ELJARA:
Magari non perché vuole dannarli.

SEAN:
Ma perché sa che può funzionare.

ELJARA:
Esatto.

SEAN:
Allora il patto diventa una missione.

ELJARA:
A volte.

Infernalism non descrive ogni caduto come uno sciocco. Alcuni comprendono l’orrore e scelgono comunque ciò che sembra offrire libertà, vendetta, conoscenza, potere o l’unica possibilità rimasta.

SEAN:

ELJARA:
No.

Sean guarda di nuovo il contratto.

SEAN:
Un’ultima variante.

ELJARA:
Sentiamo.

SEAN:
Nessun bambino morente.

ELJARA:
Nessun marito disperato?

SEAN:
Nessuna emergenza.

Scrive una frase.

La creatura torna e chiede:

Vuoi sentirlo di nuovo?

Eljara legge.

ELJARA:
Il miracolo?

SEAN:
La certezza.

ELJARA:
La gratitudine?

SEAN:
Forse.

ELJARA:

ELJARA:
Sì.

SEAN:
E lo desidera comunque.

ELJARA:
Sì.

SEAN:
Che cosa offre il demone adesso?

Eljara piega il contratto.

ELJARA:
Nulla di nuovo.

Lo posa davanti a Sean.

ELJARA:
Chiede soltanto se vuole un altro miracolo.

Sean guarda il foglio.

SEAN:
Questa è la fine dell’abbondanza.

ELJARA:
No.

SEAN:
No?

ELJARA:

Me ayudó.

Lo salvó.

Ya funcionó una vez.

¿Por qué no otra?

SEAN:
Y después empieza a contárselo a los demás.

ELJARA:
Quizá no porque quiera condenarlos.

SEAN:
Sino porque sabe que puede ayudar.

ELJARA:
Exacto.

SEAN:

ELJARA:
A veces.

ELJARA:
No.

Sean vuelve a mirar el contrato.

SEAN:
Una versión más.

ELJARA:
Adelante.

SEAN:
No hay ningún niño muriéndose.

ELJARA:
¿Ni marido desesperado?

SEAN:
No hay emergencia.

Escribe una frase.

La criatura vuelve y pregunta:

¿Quieres sentirlo otra vez?

Eljara lee.

ELJARA:
¿El milagro?

SEAN:
La certeza.

ELJARA:
¿La gratitud?

SEAN:
Puede.

ELJARA:

SEAN:

ELJARA:
Sí.

SEAN:
Y aun así lo desea.

ELJARA:
Sí.

SEAN:
¿Qué ofrece ahora el demonio?

Eljara dobla el contrato.

ELJARA:
Nada nuevo.

Lo deja delante de Sean.

ELJARA:
Solo pregunta si quiere otro milagro.

Sean mira el papel.

SEAN:
Ese es el final de la abundancia.

ELJARA:
No.

SEAN:
¿No?

ELJARA:

SEAN:
¿Es decir?

ELJARA:
Recibir algo maravilloso no es el problema.

Toca el contrato.

ELJARA:
