MONTH 9 — THE MONTH OF ABUNDANCE
WEEK 4 — TEMPTATION
SHORTFORM I — DEFINITION
WORLD OF DARKNESS
WHEN ENOUGH BECOMES NEVER
Stacy finds the thank-you card beneath the last of the plates.
“We couldn’t have done it without you.”
She puts it beside Caelwyn. He reads it and smiles.
CAELWYN:
Keeping that.
STACY:
You should. You helped them.
CAELWYN:
And I’m allowed to enjoy being appreciated.
STACY:
I wasn’t going to confiscate the pleasure.
The kitchen smells of apples and warm bread. Outside, the orchard is settling into darkness.
Caelwyn notices that she is still looking at the card.
CAELWYN:
There’s a question coming.
STACY:
What happens when they can do it without you?
CAELWYN:
Then we’ve done a decent job.
STACY:
Yes. Now imagine being disappointed by that.
He sets the card down.
CAELWYN:
Missing the feeling of being useful doesn’t make someone a monster.
STACY:
No. But imagine keeping someone dependent because you can’t bear to stop being the person who saves them.
CAELWYN:
While telling yourself you’re protecting them.
STACY:
Or knowing perfectly well that you aren’t.
That stops him.
CAELWYN:
You could recognise the difference and still miss the feeling.
STACY:
That’s the part we need to understand.
At the other end of the table, their books wait beside the remains of the feast.
Caelwyn brings the White Howlers’ history closer.
CAELWYN:
They knew what the Wyrm was.
STACY:
Their seers recognised where the passage led. They argued, listened to warnings and asked the other tribes for help. They weren’t simply walking towards something they thought was harmless.
CAELWYN:
But fighting it was their duty.
STACY:
The purpose around which they understood their lives.
CAELWYN:
Then turning back could feel like abandoning the very people they meant to protect.
STACY:
That’s our reading of the tragedy. It isn’t the same as accepting a succession of tempting gifts. Recognising danger had to compete with everything else they believed mattered.
He closes the book.
CAELWYN:
And sometimes the ability to resist changes as well.
Stacy opens Devil’s Due.
STACY:
Here, it does. Infernal empowerment can make an urge that was once manageable increasingly insistent. The rules eventually make resisting it a struggle the character can lose.
CAELWYN:
Without first deciding that evil is good.
STACY:
Exactly. The frightening part isn’t necessarily that you stop knowing. It’s that knowing may no longer be enough to make you stop.
CAELWYN:
“I hate what this is doing to me.”
STACY:
And then the next offer arrives.
CAELWYN:
“Just once more.”
A branch brushes the window.
Stacy moves Freak Legion into the lamplight.
STACY:
Dr. Veridian’s programme actually improves the people who join it. Some become satisfied and leave before possession takes hold. Others continue, growing more dependent while the influence on them deepens.
CAELWYN:
So the first improvement wasn’t imaginary.
STACY:
No. That’s why saying “it was all a lie” misses the attraction.
CAELWYN:
At first, I need strength to do something. Later, perhaps, I need something to happen so I can feel strong.
STACY:
The original purpose can get pushed aside without the reward losing its appeal.
CAELWYN:
And strength isn’t the only reward.
She opens The Shadow Court.
STACY:
The Leanhaun can inspire extraordinary art through Rhapsody. The beauty is real. So is the damage to the person creating it.
CAELWYN:
The artist has made something magnificent. The patron has received something they hunger for.
STACY:
And the relationship may be destroying the artist.
CAELWYN:
Being told to leave would mean giving up more than an obvious fraud.
STACY:
Which doesn’t make staying safe. Nor does calling yourself Seelie make you incapable of taking part in something destructive.
He looks back at the card.
CAELWYN:
A respectable identity doesn’t protect you.
STACY:
Neither does an established history. The older Baali clanbook describes vampires from other clans being recruited and ritually converted.
CAELWYN:
They don’t necessarily need to give you a new desire.
STACY:
They may find the one you already have.
In Demon: The Fallen, genuine gifts can bind a mortal closely to their giver. A person who relies heavily on those gifts may become a particularly valuable source of Faith.
CAELWYN:
Then the giver may benefit from being needed.
STACY:
And may abuse that connection. But the game also allows care and protection. A relationship is not automatically corrupt because both sides receive something.
CAELWYN:
The question is what happens when one side keeps needing more.
STACY:
And who gets hurt when they take it.
He considers the remaining books.
CAELWYN:
We can’t make every path identical, though. The Nephandi’s initiation isn’t merely one more regrettable decision.
STACY:
No. The older account describes a distinct transformation through the Caul. A long preparation can lead to a particular threshold. We need to understand the approach without pretending the threshold doesn’t matter.
CAELWYN:
What remains afterwards?
Stacy rests her hand on Dark Reflections: Spectres.
STACY:
A Spectre can still have a Psyche urging it away from Oblivion. A weaker countervoice.
CAELWYN:
Something still objects.
STACY:
That doesn’t mean the ruling personality wants redemption. But the objection hasn’t necessarily vanished.
CAELWYN:
It just isn’t the part deciding.
The kitchen has become very quiet.
CAELWYN:
So we aren’t saying desire is evil.
STACY:
No. Nor are we calling people with addictions monsters. These are different supernatural stories, not diagnoses.
CAELWYN:
We’re asking what happens when the thing satisfying a desire also changes how urgently you want it.
STACY:
What price you accept. How well you can still refuse. And how much room remains for anyone else.
He picks up the card again.
CAELWYN:
Then “enough” doesn’t mean we stop caring.
STACY:
It might mean allowing care to succeed without making ourselves indispensable.
CAELWYN:
I’m still keeping this.
STACY:
Good.
CAELWYN:
And when they manage without us next time, we can be pleased about that.
He pauses.
CAELWYN:
Even if it’s quieter.
Stacy begins gathering the plates.
STACY:
Especially if it’s quieter.
He helps her.
The card stays on the table.
For tonight, gratitude does not need to become anything else.

MYTHVEIL NOTE
This is a shortened, original Mythveil dialogue drawing on the distinct sources examined in the longform essay. The White Howlers, infernal pacts, fomori, Baali conversion, Rhapsody, Nephandic initiation and Spectres do not share one universal corruption mechanism.
The comparison does not make desire, pleasure, faith or ambition inherently corrupt, and it does not equate real addiction with evil. Caelwyn and Stacy remain external readers and observers.
Written with respect for the writers, designers, artists and communities whose work makes these questions possible.

Monat 9 — Der Monat der Fülle · Woche 4 — Versuchung · Kurzfassung I — Definition · World of Darkness
BODY:
CAELWYN:
Sie wussten, was der Wyrm war.
STACY:
CAELWYN:
„Ich hasse, was das mit mir macht.“
STACY:
Und dann kommt das nächste Angebot.
CAELWYN:
„Nur noch dieses eine Mal.“
Ein Ast streift das Fenster.
Stacy schiebt Freak Legion ins Licht der Lampe.
STACY:
CAELWYN:
Die erste Verbesserung war also keine Einbildung.
STACY:
Nein.
CAELWYN:
Und Stärke ist nicht die einzige Belohnung.
Sie öffnet The Shadow Court.
STACY:
STACY:
CAELWYN:
Was bleibt danach noch übrig?
Stacy legt die Hand auf Dark Reflections: Spectres.
STACY:
CAELWYN:
Etwas widerspricht also noch.
STACY:
CAELWYN:
Wir fragen, was passiert, wenn das, was einen Wunsch erfüllt, zugleich verändert, wie dringend man es haben will.
STACY:
Welchen Preis man akzeptiert.

Stacy apre Devil’s Due.
STACY:
Lei apre The Shadow Court.
STACY:
STACY:
Possono trovare quello che hai già.
In Demon: The Fallen, doni autentici possono legare profondamente un mortale a chi li concede.
Lui osserva i libri rimasti.
CAELWYN:
CAELWYN:
Qualcosa continua a opporsi.
STACY:
CAELWYN:
Anche se ci sarà meno rumore.
Stacy comincia a raccogliere i piatti.
STACY:
Soprattutto allora.

STACY:
CAELWYN:
Entonces dar media vuelta podía parecerles abandonar precisamente a quienes querían proteger.
STACY:
Stacy abre Devil’s Due.
STACY:
CAELWYN:
«Odio lo que esto me está haciendo.»
STACY:
Y entonces llega otra oferta.
CAELWYN:
Ella abre The Shadow Court.
STACY:
CAELWYN:
Simplemente, ya no es la que decide.
La cocina se ha quedado en silencio.
CAELWYN:
Entonces no estamos diciendo que desear sea malo.
STACY:
CAELWYN:
Aunque haya menos ruido.
Stacy empieza a recoger los platos.
STACY:
