Week 3 — The Righteous Fire

Mara and Chibi sat beside the broken fountain.

The fighting had moved farther away.

Not stopped.

Just moved.

Mara:
“They said those people were monsters.”

Chibi:
“Yes.”

She pointed towards the other street.

Mara:
“And those people…”

“…said the same thing.”

Chibi:
“Yes.”

Mara frowned.

Mara:
“So which ones are the monsters?”

Chibi didn’t answer.

A group from the old guilds passed them.

One man carried a wounded friend.

Another gave water to a crying child.

Mara:
“They don’t look like monsters.”

Chibi:
“No.”

Then reformers passed.

A healer supported a wounded guildsman.

Someone carried two children away from the smoke.

Mara:
“They don’t either.”

Chibi:
“No.”

Mara became frustrated.

Mara:
“Then why do they keep calling each other monsters?”

Chibi picked up a piece of chalk.

He drew two little people.

Chibi:
“Maybe monsters are easier.”

Mara:
“Easier than what?”

Chibi:
“People.”

She looked at him.

Chibi:
“People can be kind…”

He drew a sword in one figure’s hand.

“…and cruel.”

He drew a heart beside the other.

“They can love…”

Then another sword.

“…and still hurt someone.”

Mara stared at the drawings.

Mara:
“So monsters are simpler.”

Chibi:
“Much.”

A scream echoed down the street.

Someone shouted:

“The guilds did it!”

Another answered:

“The reformers started it!”

Within seconds…

nobody spoke about the person who had been hurt.

Only about who was to blame.

Mara:
“They care more about being right…”

“…than about who got hurt.”

Chibi:
“Sometimes being right feels very important.”

Mara:
“More important than people?”

Chibi said nothing.

From one street:

“Khorne!”

From the other:

“Tzeentch!”

Then:

“Slaanesh!”

“Nurgle!”

Mara:
“They all know what the other side is doing wrong.”

Chibi:
“Yes.”

Mara:
“Do they know what they’re doing wrong?”

Chibi tapped his chest.

Chibi:
“That’s harder.”

Mara:
“Why?”

Chibi:
“Because when someone else is wrong…”

“…you get to point.”

He pointed across the square.

Chibi:
“When you’re wrong…”

“…you have to look here.”

Silence.

A gust of wind moved the smoke.

For a heartbeat…

a horned shadow appeared above the fighting.

Something winged twisted among messengers and rumours.

Something beautiful smiled above the chanting crowds.

Something heavy waited beside the wounded.

Mara grabbed Chibi’s sleeve.

Mara:
“They’re on both sides.”

Chibi:
“Looks that way.”

Mara:
“So both sides are evil?”

Chibi:
“No.”

Mara:
“Then why are the Ruinous Powers there?”

Chibi looked towards the smoke.

Chibi:
“Maybe they don’t care who’s evil.”

Mara:
“Then what do they care about?”

A cheer rose from one street.

A scream answered from the other.

Chibi:
“Maybe…”

“…that everyone keeps burning.”

Mara looked at the ruined square.

Mara:
“They’re destroying their own city.”

Chibi:
“Yes.”

Mara:
“To save it.”

Chibi:
“Yes.”

She stared at him.

Mara:
“That’s stupid.”

Chibi:
“People can be very clever…”

“…when finding reasons…”

“…to do stupid things.”

Mara looked towards the two banners.

Mara:
“Which side would you choose?”

Chibi didn’t answer.

Then he looked away from the square.

Away from the banners.

Away from the story.

Straight towards us.

Mara followed his gaze.

Mara:
“Don’t look at me.”

Chibi smiled faintly.

Chibi:
“I wasn’t.”

Mara slowly looked towards us too.

Mara:
“Oh.”

A long silence.

Then she asked:

Mara:
“What do you think?”

The bells continued ringing.

Mara:
“Who is right?”

Chibi kept looking towards us.

Chibi:
“And how do you know?”

Two sides.

Two fires.

Two stories about who the monster is.

Perhaps one side is right.

Perhaps neither.

Perhaps both have seen something real in the other.

But the Ruinous Powers do not need us to choose the wrong side.

Sometimes…

they only need us to become absolutely certain that our side must be the right one.

So this time…

Mara and Chibi won’t answer the question.

They are asking you.
