The first stone didn’t matter.
Later, both sides would swear…
the other side threw it.
By then…
nobody cared.
Eljara:
“This wasn’t supposed to happen.”
Sean:
“Most disasters aren’t.”
Two banners flew above the square.
One belonged to the old guilds.
The other to the reformers.
Neither bore the mark of Chaos.
Both claimed they were saving the city.
Old Guild Leader:
“Look at them!”
“They promised reform.”
“They promised dialogue.”
He pointed towards a burning guildhall.
Old Guild Leader:
“Now look!”
“This is Tzeentch’s work!”
Thousands answered.
“Tzeentch!”
Eljara:
“He’s not completely wrong.”
Sean:
“No.”
Across the square, armed guildsmen advanced.
The reformist leader pointed towards them.
Reformist Leader:
“They promised order!”
“They promised peace!”
“Look at their peace!”
Someone screamed:
“Khorne!”
Hundreds joined them.
Eljara:
“And he’s not completely wrong either.”
Sean:
“No.”
Eljara:
“I hate this.”
Sean:
“Good.”
She looked at him.
Sean:
“If it starts feeling comfortable…”
“…that’s when I’d worry.”
A guildsman pulled a frightened reformist mother and her child away from the fighting.
Nearby…
a reformist healer knelt beside a wounded guildsman and pressed cloth against his wound.
Eljara:
“They’re helping each other.”
Sean:
“People are harder to hate than symbols.”
The leaders shouted again.
Old Guild Leader:
“They will erase everything we are!”
Reformist Leader:
“They will chain our children to the past!”
Two crowds roared.
Two chants began.
Two fires burned hotter…
because the other existed.
Then the smoke changed.
Above spilled blood…
something horned seemed to breathe.
Eljara:
“Khorne.”
Among rumours, plans and counterplans…
impossible wings twisted through the haze.
Eljara:
“Tzeentch.”
Above people intoxicated by belonging…
by certainty…
by being right…
something beautiful seemed to smile.
Eljara:
“Slaanesh.”
And among the wounded…
the exhausted…
those whispering only—
“Please… make it stop.”
Something ancient waited patiently.
Eljara:
“Nurgle.”
She looked from one side to the other.
Then understood.
Eljara:
“They aren’t choosing sides.”
Sean:
“Why would they?”
Eljara:
“But both sides think they’re fighting Chaos.”
Sean:
“They are.”
Eljara:
“Then how can they be feeding it?”
Sean watched another torch fly.
Sean:
“Because fighting something…”
“…doesn’t make you immune…”
“…to becoming its nourishment.”
Another clash.
Another scream.
Another accusation.
Eljara:
“They’re feeding each other.”
Sean:
“Almost.”
She looked at him.
Sean:
“They’re feeding something else.”
Eljara watched both crowds.
Eljara:
“One of them must be wrong.”
Sean:
“Probably.”
Eljara:
“Probably?”
Sean:
“Being wrong about one thing…”
“…doesn’t make everything your enemy does right.”
“And being right about one thing…”
“…doesn’t make everything you do righteous.”
One crowd suddenly pushed the other backwards.
They cheered.
They embraced.
For a moment…
they looked victorious.
Eljara:
“They think they’re winning.”
Sean looked beyond them.
Into the smoke.
At four shadows growing larger.
Sean:
“Someone is.”
🔥 Month 8 — The Inner Fire
Week 3 — The Righteous Fire
Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 4th Edition
The most dangerous conflicts are not always fought between people who believe in good and people who believe in evil.
Sometimes both sides believe they are defending something worth saving.
And sometimes both can point towards something genuinely frightening in the other.
That is when the fire becomes dangerous.
Because being right about your enemy does not automatically make you righteous.
The Ruinous Powers need no flag.
No party.
No nation.
No side.
Blood can feed Khorne from either direction.
Schemes can feed Tzeentch from either direction.
Righteous ecstasy can feed Slaanesh from either direction.
Despair can feed Nurgle from either direction.
Sometimes Chaos doesn’t need to win the argument.
It only needs us to keep fighting it.
If you remember what this felt like—
you already know what you’re missing.
Step back into it.
Or keep missing it.
