Pulp Cthulhu Noir August — The Song Nobody Hears

Sean and Eljara listen as a pianist plays in a smoky 1950s nightclub after closing time.

Sean: Play it again.

The nightclub is empty.

Chairs stand on tables.

Cigarette smoke hangs beneath the yellow lights.

The pianist closes the piano.

Pianist: You heard it.

Sean: I heard what you played for them.

Eljara watches him.

Eljara: He’s asking about the other song.

The pianist freezes.

Pianist: There is no other song.

Sean gets up.

Sean: Fair enough.

They reach the door.

Then—

one note.

Another.

They turn.

The pianist begins to play.

It isn’t music for dancing.

It isn’t music for customers.

There is longing inside it.

Fear.

Joy.

Defiance.

Perhaps love.

Sean doesn’t ask.

Neither does Eljara.

When the final note fades—

Sean: That’s yours.

The pianist nods.

Sean: Why don’t you play it for them?

The man looks at him.

Pianist: Because people listen.

Sean: Isn’t that the point?

Pianist: Not when they understand.

Silence.

The next evening,

the club is crowded.

The pianist plays exactly what everyone expects.

Then someone enters alone

and sits near the back.

The pianist notices.

His hands change.

Four quiet notes slip into the melody.

Almost invisible.

The stranger looks up.

For a few seconds,

fear disappears from their face.

Eljara: There.

Sean: What?

Eljara: The fire.

Later,

Sean finds the pianist outside.

Sean: Those four notes.

The man stiffens.

Pianist: Leave it alone.

Sean: I’m not accusing you.

The pianist laughs bitterly.

Pianist: Everybody says that before they do.

Sean falls silent.

Sean: Why keep playing?

The pianist looks back toward the club.

Pianist: Because sometimes…

“…it’s the only place I don’t have to lie.”

Eljara steps from the doorway.

Eljara: You could stop.

The pianist looks at her.

Eljara: Be careful.

Be respectable.

Never give anyone a reason to wonder.

Pianist: It would be safer.

Eljara: Then why don’t you?

This time he doesn’t hesitate.

Pianist: Because then they get to decide who I am.

Eljara smiles softly.

Eljara: There it is.

Pianist: What?

Eljara: Your fire.

Weeks later,

the club is closed.

Questions were asked.

Names were written down.

People disappeared.

The pianist is gone.

But hundreds of miles away,

Sean and Eljara enter another basement bar.

A different musician begins playing.

Four notes.

Sean stops.

Sean: You heard that?

Eljara: Of course.

Someone across the room hears them too.

They smile.

Only for a moment.

But they understand.

Sean: Think he’s here?

Eljara shakes her head.

Eljara: Doesn’t matter.

Sean: Why?

The four notes return.

Eljara: Because they made him hide the flame.

A pause.

Eljara: They never realized…

“…that fire spreads.”
