🜁 The Song of the Sparrow (Pulp Cthulhu)

A man and woman pause beside a monastery fountain while a sparrow perches between them.

Stacy

Do you hear it?

Caelwyn

Yes.

(A tiny sparrow sings from the branch of an old olive tree outside the monastery.)

Stacy

After everything we’ve seen…

after everything hidden beneath these ruins…

it still sings.

Caelwyn

It does.

Stacy

Do you think it knows how fragile life is?

(The bird hops from one branch to another.)

Caelwyn

Perhaps.

Stacy

Then why isn’t it afraid?

Caelwyn

Who says it isn’t?

(A long silence.)

Stacy

Then why sing?

Caelwyn

Perhaps…

because fear was never meant to become silence.

(The morning sun slowly rises over the monastery walls.)

Stacy

The manuscript says every civilization searched for an eternal flame.

Caelwyn

Yes.

Stacy

Some looked for it in temples.

Others in kings.

Others in gods.

Caelwyn

And what if…

they were all looking in the wrong place?

(The sparrow begins another song.)

Stacy

Where should they have looked?

Caelwyn

At the smallest things.

Stacy

A bird?

Caelwyn

A child.

Stacy

A child?

Caelwyn

Have you ever watched one discover the world?

Stacy

Every stone becomes treasure.

Every question becomes an adventure.

Caelwyn

Exactly.

Stacy

Then we grow older.

Caelwyn

No.

Stacy

No?

Caelwyn

We become convinced…

that we’ve already seen everything worth seeing.

(Silence.)

Stacy

And that is how the fire dies.

Caelwyn

Not all at once.

Stacy

How then?

Caelwyn

One unanswered question.

One forgotten song.

One abandoned dream.

One morning…

when we stop looking up.

(The sparrow suddenly takes flight across the monastery garden.)

Stacy

Do you think the Ancient Ones understand beauty?

Caelwyn

Perhaps they understand stars.

Gravity.

Time.

The birth of galaxies.

Stacy

But not beauty?

(He slowly shakes his head.)

Caelwyn

Perhaps not.

Stacy

Why?

(He watches the little bird disappear into the sunlight.)

Caelwyn

Because beauty asks for nothing.

Wonder proves nothing.

Love solves nothing.

A song changes nothing.

(A very long silence.)

Stacy

And yet…

Caelwyn

And yet…

they are the reason humanity keeps walking into another sunrise.

(The monastery bell rings softly.)

Caelwyn

Maybe that is why every civilization searched for the Eternal Fire.

Stacy

Because they feared the darkness?

Caelwyn

No.

Stacy

Then why?

(He smiles.)

Caelwyn

Because somewhere…

long before anyone built temples…

or wrote scriptures…

or looked into the stars…

a tiny bird greeted the morning…

with a song.

Theme: August · Inner Fire · The Song of the Sparrow

The greatest mysteries are not always hidden beneath forgotten temples.

Sometimes they are waiting in the smallest moments:

A child asking one more question.

A stranger choosing kindness.

A tiny bird greeting another sunrise with song.

In a universe vast enough to ignore humanity…

perhaps the greatest act of defiance is simply refusing to let your Inner Fire go out.

Step into a world where courage is not measured by power…

but by the quiet decision to keep wondering.
