The Hearth That Built Humanity World of Darkness

Sean and Eljara face each other across a lamplit library table

Sean:

You know what always amuses me?

Eljara:

That could mean almost anything.

Go on.

Sean:

People believe civilization began with walls.

With castles.

With kings.

With armies.

Eljara:

Didn’t it?

Sean:

No.

Civilization began the night someone decided not to leave the fire.

Eljara:

That sounds poetic.

Not historical.

Sean:

History often begins as poetry.

Imagine it.

The hunt is over.

The food is cooked.

The predators stay away.

For the first time…

there is nothing left to do.

No danger.

No urgency.

Only people…

and a fire.

Eljara:

So what?

Sean:

Someone speaks.

Another listens.

An elder remembers.

A child asks why the stars move.

A hunter explains where the mammoths travel.

Someone sings.

Someone laughs.

Someone tells a story that survives longer than they ever will.

That is civilization.

Eljara:

Not the fire…

The conversation around it.

Sean:

Exactly.

Fire created something no other creature possessed.

Time without survival.

Time to think.

Time to wonder.

Time to dream.

Eljara:

Then every story we’ve ever told…

begins there.

Sean:

Every religion.

Every myth.

Every kingdom.

Every philosophy.

Every law.

Before they were written…

they were spoken.

Eljara:

And every generation listened.

Sean:

Because stories carry something facts never can.

Facts tell you what happened.

Stories tell you who you are.

Eljara:

Maybe that’s why people still stare into fireplaces.

Or campfires.

Even when nobody says a word.

Sean:

You’ve noticed that too?

No one teaches children to watch flames.

Yet they do.

Neither do adults.

It’s almost instinct.

As though somewhere inside us…

we still remember the first hearth.

Eljara:

That makes the World of Darkness feel…

older than I thought.

Sean:

It is.

People think it’s about monsters.

But every chronicle begins exactly the same way.

A few strangers gather together.

Someone starts telling a story.

Hours disappear.

People laugh.

People argue.

People mourn.

And when it’s over…

they leave carrying memories that never actually happened.

Yet somehow…

they’re real.

Eljara:

Just like those first people around the fire.

Sean:

Exactly.

Every gaming table is another campfire.

The dice replace the embers.

The Storyteller replaces the elder.

The darkness still waits beyond the light.

And for a little while…

humanity remembers where it came from.

Eljara:

Maybe civilization never really ended.

Maybe we simply traded wood…

for stories.

Sean:

And as long as someone is willing to tell one…

the fire will never truly go out.
