They leave the store.

Across the street another billboard advertises miracle pesticides.

Another promises miracle vitamins.

Another promises miracle cigarettes.

Sean laughs quietly.

Sean: Funny.

Eljara looks at him.

Sean: Everything’s a miracle now.

She nods.

Eljara: Miracles always sell.

They stop at a public demonstration.

A cheerful representative sprays a brand-new household chemical across a garden.

“It’s completely safe.”

The crowd applauds.

Families carry home free samples.

Nobody asks a question.

Sean watches them leave.

Sean: Do you think he knows?

Eljara studies the smiling representative.

Eljara: I think he believes it.

Sean: Is there a difference?

A long silence.

The evening sun reflects in the department store windows.

One advertisement catches Sean’s eye.

YOU OWE YOUR FAMILY THE BEST.

Sean studies the words.

Sean: That’s not advertising.

Eljara quietly smiles.

Eljara: No.

Another pause.

“It’s guilt…

“…wearing the mask of love.”

Tomorrow’s America keeps making promises.

The town keeps believing them.

Because hope has always been easier to buy

than uncertainty.
