🪨 The Broken Circle 🎲 PLAY EPIC. FEEL THE STORY. Game: Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 4th Edition Campaign: Mythveil Chronicles Theme: July · The Price of Progress · The Broken Circle

Workers dismantled an ancient stone circle.

A watchtower would stand there before winter.

The foreman called it progress.

Mara:
“It was only a pile of old stones.”

Chibi:
“Perhaps.”

She walked around the broken circle.

Only three stones remained standing.

Mara:
“Nobody even knows who built it.”

Chibi:
“No.”

Mara:
“Then why keep it?”

The boy looked at the empty place where another stone had once stood.

Chibi:
“Do you know who planted the oldest oak in the village?”

Mara:
“No.”

Chibi:
“Should we cut it down?”

She frowned.

Mara:
“That’s different.”

Chibi:
“Why?”

Silence.

Mara:
“…Because it’s alive.”

Chibi gently placed his hand on one of the weathered stones.

Chibi:
“So are memories.”

The workers laughed as another stone was dragged away.

To them—

it was only rock.

Mara:
“But nobody remembers what this place was for.”

Chibi:
“Exactly.”

She looked confused.

Mara:
“Exactly?”

Chibi:
“If nobody remembers…”

A pause.

Chibi:
“…how do they know it no longer matters?”

The wind passed through the clearing.

A flock of crows rose into the sky.

Mara:
“So our ancestors were just superstitious.”

Chibi:
“Maybe.”

Mara:
“You don’t believe that.”

The boy watched the workers measure the foundations for the new tower.

Chibi:
“I believe people rarely protect something for centuries…”

Another pause.

Chibi:
“…without a reason.”

The first chalk lines appeared across the ancient ground.

Perfect.

Straight.

Precise.

Mara:
“So progress isn’t dangerous.”

Chibi:
“No.”

Mara:
“Then what is?”

The boy looked at the broken ring.

Chibi:
“The certainty that our ancestors had nothing left to teach us.”

Silence.

The last standing stone cast a long shadow.

No one noticed.

Mara:
“So this is where Chaos breaks the world.”

For the first time—

Chibi didn’t smile.

Chibi:
“No.”

Mara:
“No?”

The workers pulled another stone from the earth.

Chibi:
“Chaos never needed to break the circle.”

A long silence.

Chibi:
“It only needed us to decide…”

He looked at the abandoned monument.

Chibi:
“…that remembering was less important than building.”
