“Everyone says freedom is wonderful.”
Chibi:
“It is.”
“Then why do you look sad?”
Silence.
Chibi:
“Because people think freedom means nobody has to protect them anymore.”
Mara watched the fireworks burst across the sky.
“But isn’t that the point?”
“No.”
“It’s the beginning.”
“The beginning of what?”
“Protecting someone else.”
A long silence.
Families laughed around the bonfires.
Children chased glowing sparklers.
Everything felt safe.
Mara:
“So when we’re children…”
“…someone protects us.”
Chibi:
“Yes.”
“And when we grow up?”
“We protect others.”
Silence.
Mara frowned.
“What if nobody wants to?”
For the first time all evening,
Chibi looked genuinely afraid.
“Then everyone waits…”
“…for someone else.”
Another firework exploded overhead.
The crowd cheered.
Mara looked across the celebration.
“So…”
“…who protects us now?”
Chibi watched the last sparks disappear into the night.
Then quietly answered:
“The first person…”
“…who remembers that freedom was never the end of the story.”
