Caelwyn:
“Everyone celebrates freedom.”
Stacy:
“They do.”
Caelwyn:
“Do they ever celebrate what it costs?”
Silence.
Stacy:
“Prometheus gained fire.”
“He lost peace.”
“Adam and Eve gained choice.”
“They lost Eden.”
“Lucifer gained independence.”
“He lost Heaven.”
Another firework exploded above them.
Children laughed.
The crowd cheered.
Caelwyn:
“So every story ends with a punishment.”
Stacy slowly shook her head.
“No.”
“With responsibility.”
Silence.
Caelwyn:
“I thought freedom meant having no chains.”
Stacy:
“No.”
“It means choosing which ones are worth carrying.”
A long silence.
The last fireworks faded into the summer night.
Then Caelwyn quietly asked:
“So what is the price of freedom?”
Stacy watched the smoke drift across the stars.
Then she answered.
“The moment nobody is left to protect you…”
“…you become responsible for protecting everyone else.”
