Mara
Why are boys allowed to wander farther?
Chibi
Because they always have.
(They sit beneath an old oak at the edge of the village. Beyond the final cottage, a forgotten woodland path disappears into the trees.)
Mara
That’s not a reason.
Chibi
My father says it’s safer.
Mara
For who?
Chibi
For girls.
(A pause.)
Mara
Does the forest know I’m a girl?
(Silence.)
Chibi
I don’t think forests care.
Mara
Neither do I.
(The wind moves gently through the leaves.)
Chibi
Then why do adults?
Mara
Because adults worry.
Chibi
About danger.
Mara
Yes.
(She watches the old path.)
Mara
Maybe the stories once said:
“If you enter the forest… remember the rules.”
Chibi
And now?
Mara
Now they say:
“Don’t enter the forest.”
(A long silence.)
Chibi
That’s easier.
Mara
Much easier.
Chibi
Is it wrong?
(She thinks for a moment.)
Mara
If nobody learns the rules anymore…
(The breeze falls still.)
Mara
…who will remember them?
Chibi
Do you think the old things care whether we’re boys or girls?
(Mara looks toward the dark woods.)
Mara
No.
Chibi
Then what do they care about?
(The forest remains silent.)
Mara
Whether we pay attention.
