“Then why are we fighting it?”
“Because it’s the first one we noticed.”

Sean frowned.
“You’re telling me there are more?”
“There were always more.”
The music drifted across the festival.
Children laughed.
Lanterns floated through the warm June night.
Everything still felt beautiful.
Sean looked back at her.
“How many?”
Eljara hesitated.
“Enough.”
A long silence.
“The Summer Court crosses through sunlight.”
Sean nodded.
“I’ve seen them.”
“The Winter Court crosses through silence.”
“The Court Beneath through deep water.”
“The Ash Court through great fires.”
Sean swallowed.
“And the Nightmare Court?”
For the first time all evening—
Eljara looked uncomfortable.
“It doesn’t cross places.”
Silence.
“It crosses people.”
Sean felt the warmth leave the fire.
“What does that mean?”
“When the veil weakens…”
“…dreams stop belonging only to us.”
Silence.
Sean remembered.
Schools reporting identical nightmares.
Children drawing the same impossible forests.
Sleep laboratories finding patterns no one could explain.
“We blamed stress.”
“Yes.”
“We blamed trauma.”
“Yes.”
“We blamed psychology.”
“Yes.”
“All real.”
“All measurable.”
“All incomplete.”
Sean stared into the flames.
“So the science…”
“…was never wrong.”
“No.”
“It only measured the footprints.”
A gust of wind swept through the festival.
For one impossible second—
every bonfire bent toward the forest.
Not away from it.
Toward it.
Sean looked into the darkness.
Something blinked.
Not one pair of eyes.
Hundreds.
Then nothing.
He whispered:
“They’ve noticed.”
