“So that’s it?”
Caelwyn looked up from the climate reports.
“The scientists were right?”
Stacy nodded.
“They were.”
“The planet is warming.”
“Yes.”
“The oceans.”
“Yes.”
“The atmosphere.”
“Yes.”
Silence.
“Then why are we still looking?”
Stacy placed another stack of documents on the table.
Temple records.
Ancient calendars.
Forgotten treaties.
“What are those?”
“The second half of the data.”
Caelwyn frowned.
“That’s mythology.”
“No.”
“It only became mythology after people forgot what it was.”
Silence.
He opened the oldest manuscript.
One sentence appeared over and over again.
When the boundary weakens, the Courts awaken.
“Courts?”
“I thought there was only one.”
“So did I.”
Stacy unfolded an ancient diagram.
The Summer Court.
The Winter Court.
The Nightmare Court.
The Court Beneath.
The Ash Court.
Caelwyn stared at it.
“Those aren’t kingdoms.”
“No.”
“What are they?”
“Neighbouring realities.”
A long silence filled the room.
Caelwyn finally asked:
“So climate change is opening the veil?”
Stacy shook her head.
“No.”
“Then what?”
“The climate isn’t creating the breach.”
“It is revealing it.”
Silence.
“The science isn’t wrong.”
“But it isn’t seeing the whole picture.”
Caelwyn looked back at the ancient treaty.
“The Summer King…”
“…wasn’t protecting us from monsters.”
“No.”
“He was protecting the veil.”
“And if the veil fails?”
For the first time all day—
Stacy looked genuinely afraid.
Then she whispered:
“The Summer Court won’t be the last to cross.”
