WHEN THEY STOPPED PRETENDING Pulp Cthulhu: By Gaslight — Mythveil Chronicles June · The Summer King · Week 4

“Why don’t adults see them?”

Mara watched the figure standing in the afternoon sunlight.

Perfectly still.

Too tall.

Its outline shimmered like heat above stone.

Chibi didn’t look surprised.

“They do.”

“No, they don’t.”

“They just refuse to believe what they’re seeing.”

Silence.

The festival echoed across the valley.

Music.

Laughter.

The smell of fresh bread and bonfires.

The perfect summer afternoon.

Mara pointed again.

“He’s still there.”

“Yes.”

“Why doesn’t anyone react?”

“Because their minds protect them.”

Silence.

“They call it heat haze.”

“A reflection.”

“Exhaustion.”

“Anything except the truth.”

Mara watched people glance toward the figure.

Every single one looked away.

A heartbeat later—

they smiled.

Continued talking.

Continued laughing.

As though nothing had ever been there.

“They forget…”

“…while they’re looking.”

Chibi nodded.

“The veil protects both worlds.”

“It doesn’t hide them.”

“It hides certainty.”

A warm wind crossed the meadow.

The figure moved.

Not by walking.

Not by running.

The sunlight folded around it.

And suddenly—

it stood much closer.

No footsteps.

No sound.

Just…

Closer.

Mara grabbed Chibi’s arm.

“Did you see that?”

“Yes.”

“How did it move?”

“It didn’t.”

Silence.

“Our rules don’t belong to them.”

The first great bonfire burst into flame.

For one impossible second—

every figure across the valley turned toward the fire.

Together.

Perfectly.

Like a single mind.

Mara whispered:

“How many are there?”

Chibi answered quietly.

“As many as there have always been.”

Then—

the nearest figure slowly turned its head.

It looked directly at Mara.

And smiled.

Not with kindness.

Not with hatred.

With recognition.

Mara felt her stomach drop.

“Why is it smiling?”

For the first time,

Chibi looked afraid.

A very long silence passed.

Then he whispered:

“Because…”

“…it knows we can see it now.”

The music continued.

The people danced.

The fires burned.

Nobody screamed.

Nobody ran.

Nobody noticed.

Because the oldest protection humanity ever possessed

was never the fire.

It was never the crown.

It was never even the Summer King.

It was believing

there was nothing there.
