Nobody moved.
For the first time—
the city had become completely still.
No bells.
No sermons.
No marching.
No prayers.
Only silence.
The golden light had finally arrived.
Not blinding.
Not burning.
Simply…
there.
Mara:
Is this the Emperor?
Chibi watched the light.
For a long time he didn’t answer.
Then quietly—
Chibi:
I don’t know.
A pause.
Chibi:
Maybe it doesn’t matter.
Mara looked at him.
Mara:
How can that not matter?
The light continued moving across the plaza.
Touching every face equally.
Every stone.
Every banner.
Every tear.
No one was chosen first.
No one was forgotten.
Chibi:
Because everyone keeps asking the wrong question.
The light reached an old Guardsman.
He removed his helmet.
Closed his eyes.
And smiled.
A few steps away—
another soldier gripped his weapon tighter than ever before.
The same light.
Two different hearts.
A healer embraced a frightened child.
Another rushed toward a laboratory—
unable to stop searching for one final cure.
The same compassion.
Two different endings.
A priest lowered his head in humility.
Another demanded everyone look at him instead.
The same faith.
Two different souls.
Mara:
The light isn’t making them different.
For the first time all day—
Chibi smiled.
Chibi:
No.
A pause.
Chibi:
It never did.
Silence.
Mara:
Then… what is it doing?
Chibi looked across the sea of people.
Millions of lives.
Millions of choices.
Chibi:
It’s showing everyone who they’ve been becoming all along.
The words settled into the silence.
Some faces looked peaceful.
Others looked afraid.
Not because the light had changed them.
Because they could no longer hide from themselves.
Mara:
So…
A long pause.
Mara:
Nobody is being judged?
Chibi slowly shook his head.
Chibi:
No.
Another silence.
Chibi:
The judging ended the moment everyone decided who they wanted to become.
The plaza remained perfectly still.
An entire civilization standing beneath the same impossible dawn.
Waiting.
Not for an answer.
For the courage to accept one.
Mara:
What happens after this?
Chibi looked toward the endless golden horizon.
Then back at Mara.
He smiled.
Small.
Hopeful.
Human.
Chibi:
Now…
A pause.
Chibi:
…everyone has to live with the person they chose to become.
The light spread across the last corner of the plaza.
No one spoke.
No one needed to.
Because the final question belonged to every soul beneath that dawn.
When the light of the Emperor finally shines upon you…
…what will you be?
