“Maintenance.”

He nodded.
“That’s what people get wrong.”

The summer wind moved through the meadow.

“The Romans renewed contracts with their gods.”
“The Celts renewed agreements with the land.”
“The details changed.”
“The idea didn’t.”
Stacy looked toward the dark forest beyond the meadow.
“You think they actually believed that?”
Caelwyn’s expression grew serious.
“No.”
A pause.
“I think they knew it.”
Something cracked deep inside the trees.
Neither moved.
Neither spoke.
The forest suddenly felt closer.
Older.
Patient.
“What happens when the bargain ends?” Stacy finally asked.
Caelwyn kept staring into the darkness.
“It doesn’t.”

The wind died.

Listening.
“And if nobody renews it?”
