🜍 THE SHIFT NEVER ENDS — WEEK 1 Sean & Eljara The Break Room Below Pulp Cthulhu

The break room smells like burnt coffee.
And wet wool.
A ceiling fan turns slowly overhead.
Workers sit in silence:
- dockhands
- mechanics
- rail operators
- steelworkers
Nobody talks loudly.
The room hums instead.
Quiet exhaustion.
A radio crackles near the kitchen.
Then:
SHIFT DELAY — LOWER PLATFORM B
Nobody reacts.
One worker keeps eating.
Another lights a cigarette.
“That’s not normal,” Sean says quietly.
“It is here,” Eljara answers.
A man near the coffee urn laughs once.
“Platform B again?”
“Better them than tunnel crews.”
A few workers nod.
Nobody asks what happened.
That’s the strange part.
Nobody asks.
A woman in grease-stained coveralls sits beside them.
“You’re new,” she says.
“Temporary,” Sean answers.
She snorts softly.
“That’s what everyone says.”
“How long have you worked here?” Eljara asks.
The woman thinks for a moment.
“Seven years.”
Sean frowns.
“At a shipping yard?”
The woman smiles faintly.
“That’s what they call it.”
The loudspeaker crackles again:
MAINTENANCE CREWS REPORT BELOW
Workers stand automatically.
One man curses quietly.
Still goes.
“You know what’s down there,” Sean says.
“We know enough.”
“Then why stay?”
The woman leans back slowly.
“My husband died last winter.”
Silence.
“He worked tunnel ventilation.”
A pause.
“They gave me his position three days later.”
Sean looks toward the steel doorway.
“And that didn’t bother you?”
The woman laughs once.
“Bother doesn’t pay rent.”
The fan keeps turning overhead.
Slow.
Uneven.
“They know people disappear,” Eljara says quietly.
“Yes.”
“They know something’s wrong.”
“Yes.”
“And nobody leaves.”
The woman finally looks at them.
“Leave for where?”
No one answers.
Somewhere deeper below, a siren sounds.
Long.
Heavy.
Several workers tense visibly.
One man closes his eyes briefly.
Then stands anyway.
“They’ll send heroes eventually,” the woman says.
Sean watches her carefully.
“You think so?”
She nods once.
“They always do in stories.”
A pause.
“And when they blow this place apart…”
Steam hisses somewhere in the walls.
The woman finishes her cold coffee.
“…what do you think happens to the people still inside?”
Nobody answers.
🜍 THE SHIFT NEVER ENDS — Week 1
Everyone talks about stopping evil.
Nobody talks about the people trapped inside it.
If you remember what this felt like —
you already know what you’re missing.
Step back into it.
Or keep missing it.
