“It’s still there.”
Stacy scrolls.
Same datasets.
New entries.
Same structure.
“That’s expected,” she says.
“Patterns repeat.”
Caelwyn shakes his head slightly.
“Not like this.”
She zooms in.
Timing markers.
Pauses.
Corrections.
All of it lines up.
Cleaner than before.
“That’s… consistent,” she says.
“Too consistent.”
She runs a comparison.
Week 1.
Week 2.
The deviation is gone.
“They’re not adjusting anymore,” she says.
“No.”
“They’re holding.”
Silence.
She switches to movement data.
Pedestrians.
Vehicles.
Same delays.
Same corrections.
Same timing.
Across different locations.
“That shouldn’t stabilize,” she says quietly.
“No.”
She leans back.
“Errors drift.”
“Yeah.”
“This doesn’t drift.”
Caelwyn watches the pattern settle.
“It stays.”
A pause.
Stacy scrolls again.
Same sentence appears.
Different voice.
Same structure.
“That’s not what I meant.”
She doesn’t react this time.
“That’s not new,” she says.
“No.”
“That’s the problem.”
She runs a filter.
Removes noise.
Outliers.
Variance.
What remains—
is still there.
Unchanged.
“That’s in the clean data,” she says.
“Yeah.”
Silence.
“That means it’s not the anomaly.”
“No.”
She looks at him.
“Then what is it?”
Caelwyn doesn’t look away from the screen.
“It’s what everything else adjusts to.”
The words land heavy.
Stacy exhales slowly.
“That makes it the reference.”
“Yes.”
Outside, the city moves.
People walk.
Talk.
Pause.
Correct.
Continue.
Same rhythm.
Same structure.
No one reacts.
No one questions it.
“That shouldn’t happen,” she says.
“No.”
“It should break.”
“It doesn’t.”
A long pause.
Stacy closes the file.
“Then it’s not going away.”
Caelwyn nods once.
“No.”
She looks at the screen again.
At the pattern that doesn’t move.
Doesn’t change.
Doesn’t leave.
And for the first time—
she doesn’t try to fix it.
Because now she knows.
It’s not something in the system.
It’s what the system is starting to follow.
