The first scream was answered by applause.
Not clapping.
Blades struck metal.
Cups hammered against tables.
Thousands of voices rose together.
Then the crowd laughed.
Stacy watched the human prisoner collapse in the arena below.
She did not.
**STACY:**
“They enjoyed that.”
**CAELWYN:**
“Yes.”
“That wasn’t a question.”
“I know.”
—
The arena descended farther than Stacy could see.
Balconies curved around the fighting pit.
Drukhari in impossible fabrics lounged beside warriors in lacquered armour.
Music came from several directions at once.
People wagered.
Flirted.
Threatened.
Ate.
Drank.
Argued over which fighter would bleed first.
Stacy folded her arms.
**STACY:**
“I don’t like this place.”
Caelwyn watched the crowd.
**CAELWYN:**
“I’d have been concerned if you did.”
—
A Wych entered the pit.
The crowd changed.
Not simply louder.
Focused.
Her opponent was human.
A prisoner.
He looked up.
Thousands of faces looked back.
The music began.
He attacked.
She moved aside.
Barely.
The blade passed close enough to touch her hair.
The entire arena inhaled.
One breath.
Thousands of people.
Stacy felt it in her ribs.
Then the fight became beautiful.
That was the part she hated most.
Speed.
Balance.
Precision.
The Wych seemed to know exactly how close death could come without touching her.
Every dodge made the crowd louder.
Every cut sharpened their attention.
Stacy stopped watching the fighters.
She watched the spectators.
A Drukhari who had looked exhausted was sitting straighter.
Another closed his eyes when the prisoner cried out.
Colour returned to a woman’s face.
Stacy became very still.
**STACY:**
“They’re feeding.”
Caelwyn nodded.
—
The Wych cut the prisoner.
Not deeply.
Precisely.
The crowd surged.
**STACY:**
“So this isn’t metaphor.”
“No.”
“The suffering actually does something to them.”
“Yes.”
She watched the faces around them.
**STACY:**
“They need it.”
Caelwyn hesitated.
**CAELWYN:**
“They believe they do.”
Stacy looked at him.
“That’s evasive.”
“Yes.”
“Food?”
“Sometimes.”
“Medicine?”
“Perhaps.”
“Addiction?”
“Possibly.”
“Culture?”
“Yes.”
She looked down.
“Survival?”
Caelwyn’s expression tightened.
**CAELWYN:**
“Yes.”
—
A young Drukhari near the railing moved when the Wych moved.
Shoulder.
Head.
Hands.
When the fighter dodged, he flinched.
When she struck, he laughed.
Stacy frowned.
**STACY:**
“I know that face.”
Caelwyn looked at her.
“The one where someone stops merely watching.”
She remembered Mara among the Aeldari dancers.
Sean tapping along with the Orks.
The Space Wolves striking the table beneath a saga.
**STACY:**
“I liked this mechanism better last week.”
Caelwyn looked towards the arena.
**CAELWYN:**
“The mechanism didn’t change.”
“No.”
“The meaning did.”
—
The Wych could have ended the fight earlier.
Everyone knew.
Especially the prisoner.
She gave him room.
Hope.
He stood.
The crowd quietened.
He charged.
One perfect movement.
The Wych’s blade entered.
The prisoner stopped.
Then fell.
For one second—
silence.
Then the arena exploded.
Music.
Voices.
Metal.
Laughter.
The entire place seemed to inhale.
Strangers touched shoulders.
Rivals shouted into each other’s faces.
Someone kissed the person beside them.
People laughed.
Chanted.
Raised cups.
Stacy looked around.
**STACY:**
“They’re happy.”
**CAELWYN:**
“Yes.”
She hated how ordinary the word sounded.
—
The Wych left.
The body was removed.
But the crowd did not disperse.
The energy remained.
The music changed.
Sharper now.
Expectant.
Stacy looked up.
**STACY:**
“Another fight?”
**CAELWYN:**
“No.”
A vast holographic world appeared above the arena.
Blue oceans.
Green land.
Cities glowing on the night side.
Human cities.
Stacy’s expression changed.
**STACY:**
“Oh.”
The Drukhari understood before she did.
The cheering began high above them.
Then spread.
Images followed.
A convoy.
A settlement.
Defences.
Routes.
A Kabal symbol.
The arena erupted.
A figure appeared above the pit.
An Archon.
He raised one hand.
The crowd fell quiet.
He spoke.
The world rotated behind him.
Then he pointed.
The arena became thunder.
Stacy whispered:
**STACY:**
“There.”
Caelwyn turned.
**STACY:**
“The direction.”
—
Everything changed.
Not the feeling.
The activity.
Drukhari who had been drinking began speaking into communication devices.
Warriors left their seats.
Wyches gathered.
Servants carried weapons instead of food.
Arguments became negotiations.
Wagers became raiding claims.
The celebration reorganised itself around a distant world.
**STACY:**
“They were celebrating.”
“Yes.”
“Now they’re mobilising.”
“Yes.”
She looked at Caelwyn.
**STACY:**
“Again.”
—
Mara had told her about the Imperial feast.
The Guardsmen.
The Sororitas.
The Black Templars.
The flowers tied to the tank.
The hymn that kept going after the feast became a march.
No Emperor here.
No Saints.
No prayer.
No promise of protecting those behind the line.
And yet—
the feeling moved.
**STACY:**
“Same mechanism.”
Caelwyn answered immediately.
**CAELWYN:**
“No.”
Stacy blinked.
**STACY:**
“No?”
“Similar movement.”
He looked towards the projected world.
**CAELWYN:**
“Not the same meaning.”
A group of Wyches passed beneath them.
“Not the same choice.”
A cage was wheeled towards one of the exits.
“Not the same consequence.”
Stacy nodded slowly.
**STACY:**
“But the pattern matters.”
“Yes.”
—
She watched.
**STACY:**
“They gather.”
“Yes.”
“They build the feeling.”
“Yes.”
“The feeling becomes shared.”
“Yes.”
“And then something gives it an object.”
Caelwyn looked towards the Archon.
**CAELWYN:**
“Sometimes someone.”
“Sometimes?”
“Sometimes the crowd finds one for itself.”
Stacy remembered the Orks.
**STACY:**
“Something to hit.”
“Yes.”
“The Imperials already had a war waiting outside.”
“Yes.”
“And here…”
She looked at the world above the arena.
**STACY:**
“Something to hunt.”
—
The arena emptied.
Yet nobody behaved as though the celebration had ended.
They still laughed.
Still shouted.
Still carried cups.
Only the words changed.
From fighters—
to targets.
From wagers—
to raids.
From tonight’s spectacle—
to tomorrow’s captives.
Stacy watched a group disappear into a corridor.
**STACY:**
“They’re taking it with them too.”
**CAELWYN:**
“Yes.”
—
She leaned against the railing.
Below, attendants washed blood from the floor.
Above, the distant human world continued to turn.
**STACY:**
“So a feast can make energy.”
“Yes.”
“Belonging.”
“Yes.”
“Courage.”
“Yes.”
“Desire.”
“Yes.”
“Hunger.”
“Yes.”
“And that can be pointed.”
Caelwyn nodded.
**CAELWYN:**
“Yes.”
—
Stacy stared at the holographic cities.
Tiny lights.
Homes.
People.
None of them knew thousands of Drukhari had just cheered when their world appeared.
**STACY:**
“They aren’t part of this celebration.”
“No.”
“They don’t know they’ve been chosen.”
“No.”
“For everyone here, this is anticipation.”
“Yes.”
“And for everyone there…”
Caelwyn remained silent.
Stacy finished it.
**STACY:**
“…it’s tomorrow.”
—
Webway portals opened.
Raiders began moving.
The laughter continued with them.
Stacy watched.
**STACY:**
“The feeling doesn’t have to tell you what to do.”
“No.”
“It can make doing something easier.”
“Yes.”
“Because you’re already moving.”
Caelwyn considered that.
**CAELWYN:**
“Or because standing still suddenly feels wrong.”
Stacy looked at him.
That was worse.
—
A young Drukhari passed beneath them.
The hollowness in his face had eased.
He looked almost radiant.
He laughed when another warrior shoved him.
Then shoved back.
Together they disappeared towards a portal.
**STACY:**
“They’re going because they want to.”
“Yes.”
“No commissar.”
“No.”
“No priest.”
“No.”
“No Emperor.”
“No.”
Stacy watched them vanish.
**STACY:**
“That’s important.”
**CAELWYN:**
“Very.”
—
She thought of Mara’s question.
**STACY:**
“Mara asked how people know God wants them to march.”
Caelwyn nodded.
“These people don’t need God.”
“No.”
“So that wasn’t the whole question.”
“No.”
Stacy watched another group head towards the portals.
**STACY:**
“Maybe the deeper question is how a group becomes ready to move at all.”
Caelwyn looked at her.
**CAELWYN:**
“Better.”
—
The arena still pulsed with excitement.
Stacy frowned.
**STACY:**
“Does the target create the excitement?”
Caelwyn waited.
“Or does the excitement create the need for a target?”
A faint smile.
**CAELWYN:**
“Now you’re asking the unpleasant question.”
Stacy looked down.
The fight had fed the crowd.
The crowd had become more intense.
Then the raid had been announced.
The raid would bring captives.
Captives could end up here.
Arena.
Ecstasy.
Raid.
Captives.
Arena.
Again.
Stacy stopped.
**STACY:**
“Oh.”
—
“So the action doesn’t only follow the feast.”
**CAELWYN:**
“No.”
“It supplies the next one.”
“Yes.”
“And the next feast can make the next action easier.”
“Possibly.”
Stacy looked at him.
**STACY:**
“Possibly?”
Caelwyn met her eyes.
**CAELWYN:**
“Don’t mistake a pattern for a prison.”
“They’re shaped by what they are.”
“Yes.”
“By She Who Thirsts.”
“Yes.”
“By their culture.”
“Yes.”
“By need.”
“Yes.”
“By habit.”
“Yes.”
“And you still call it choice?”
Caelwyn looked towards the departing raiders.
**CAELWYN:**
“If choice only existed when nothing influenced us, nobody would ever choose anything.”
—
Stacy was quiet.
**STACY:**
“So choice survives inside pressure.”
“Yes.”
“Inside hunger.”
“Yes.”
“Inside culture.”
“Yes.”
“Inside ecstasy.”
“Yes.”
She looked at him.
**STACY:**
“Then responsibility survives too.”
Caelwyn held her gaze.
**CAELWYN:**
“Yes.”
—
A chant began.
An Archon’s name.
More voices joined.
A squad of raiders marched with it.
Stacy listened.
**STACY:**
“There’s the hymn.”
Caelwyn looked at her.
She knew it was not the same hymn.
Not the same faith.
Not the same reason.
Not the same action.
That was precisely the point.
**STACY:**
“Not the same meaning.”
“No.”
“Not the same choice.”
“No.”
“Not the same consequence.”
“No.”
She watched the raiders disappear.
**STACY:**
“But the feeling learned how to walk.”
Caelwyn nodded.
**CAELWYN:**
“Yes.”
—
The arena lights dimmed.
The crowd thinned.
The feast was ending.
Or perhaps it had simply moved elsewhere.
Stacy stared towards the last open portal.
**STACY:**
“What happens if every celebration needs somewhere to go?”
Caelwyn waited until another group disappeared through.
Then:
**CAELWYN:**
“Perhaps one day you stop waiting for a reason to move.”
The portal began to close.
**CAELWYN:**
“And start looking for somewhere to point.”
The laughter vanished with it.
The arena remained behind.
Empty seats.
Abandoned cups.
Blood being washed away.
Stacy looked at the space where thousands had been.
The energy was gone from the room.
But it had not disappeared.
Somewhere else—
it was arriving.
**When a celebration fills us with enough courage, hunger, anger or belonging to act together, how do we know whether we have chosen a direction — or merely become ready for whoever gives us a target?**
