The drums don’t break.
That’s what makes it worse.
The horned mask goes on.
The man shudders once.
Then he straightens.
Not violently.
Correctly.
Eljara doesn’t move.
Sean watches the shoulders.
No spasms.
No frenzy.
Precision.
The masked figure lifts one hand.
The fishermen untie boats.
He hasn’t spoken yet.
When he does, the voice is calm.
He names tides.
He names shoals.
He names tomorrow’s storm.
Practical things.
Useful things.
The villagers obey immediately.
Not terrified.
Aligned.
The mask tilts.
Just before the head beneath it moves.
Sean sees it.
A fraction early.
The wood leads.
The body follows.
The masked man approaches them.
Stops two steps away.
Through the eyeholes, his eyes are still there.
Present.
Aware.
“You are watching,” the voice says.
Not a threat.
A statement.
Eljara holds his gaze.
“We are.”
The mask inclines.
“Good.”
A pause.
“Witness matters.”
He turns away.
He does not remove the mask.
The ritual doesn’t end.
It continues into the night.
And the sea remains perfectly calm.
