🜍 MASKS — WEEK 3 (Pulp Cthulhu1930s) Mara & Chibi The Mask That Didn’t Leave

The drums stopped.

That was wrong.

Mara felt it first.

Not quieter.

Straighter.

Down the shoreline, the masked man was walking away from the circle.

Not carried.

Not trembling.

Walking.

Chibi frowned.

“That’s not how games end.”

“No,” Mara said softly. “That’s how they continue.”

The villagers weren’t kneeling anymore.

They were working.

Untying boats.
Moving crates.
Fixing ropes.

Like after instructions.

The masked head turned once.

Too precise.

Not searching.

Choosing.

Chibi swallowed.

“He’s still in there.”

“Yes.”

“That’s worse.”

The sea didn’t move.

The sky didn’t answer.

The masked figure passed the last lantern.

No one asked him to remove it.

No one looked afraid.

Chibi shifted his weight.

“Do you think it leaves later?”

Mara watched the dark swallow the silhouette.

“I think it waits.”

“For what?”

“For when it’s useful.”

Chibi didn’t like that.

He kicked a pebble into the water.

“I liked it better when masks were pretend.”

Mara nodded.

“So did he.”

The drums did not return.

And somewhere in the village, a door closed softly.

Like something had gone home.
