🜍 MASKS — WEEK 3 (Pulp Cthulhu 1930s) Caelwyn & Stacy When the Mask Rides

The drums don’t change.

That’s what makes it wrong.

If this were hysteria, the rhythm would break.
If this were fear, someone would scream.

But the beat holds.

A villager steps forward.
Horned mask. Too many teeth.

He trembles.

Just once.

Then he straightens.

Not dramatically.

Correctly.

Caelwyn
He’s stabilizing.

Stacy
No.

She doesn’t watch the man.

She watches the circle.

No one rushes him.
No one steadies him.

They’re waiting.

The masked head lifts.

The motion is precise.

When he speaks, the voice is calm.

He names the tide schedule for six nights.
He names a shoal that will shift at dawn.
He names a storm that will turn east.

The villagers bow.

Caelwyn
He couldn’t know that.

Stacy
Not alone.

The mask moves.

Not with his breath.

Just before it.

A fraction of a second.

The body follows.

The masked figure turns.

Slowly.

And looks directly at them.

No rage.
No threat.

Recognition.

A small nod.

As if acknowledging witnesses.

The drums never falter.

The sea remains still.

The man does not remove the mask.

Not when the fires burn low.

Not when the villagers disperse.

He walks away wearing it.

And no one asks him to stop.

Caelwyn
If he keeps it on—

Stacy
—then this isn’t visitation.

She watches the dark street swallow him.

Stacy
It’s residency.

The sea stays perfectly calm.

That’s what makes it worse.
