MASKS & MASQUERADE — Week 3 (Pulp Cthulhu byy Gaslight) When the Walls Begin to Hum

Mara woke before the sound reached her.

It wasn’t noise.

It was weight.

The air felt slightly thicker, as if the room had inhaled and forgotten to let go.

Across the narrow bedroom, Chibi was already sitting upright.

“You felt that,” he whispered.

“Yes.”

Below them, distant music from the ballroom drifted through the night. But that wasn’t what pressed against the house.

It was the floor.

It was humming.

Not loud.
Not shaking.
Just… steady.

Chibi slid from the bed and crouched, placing his palm flat against the wooden boards.

“It’s like when we touch the piano,” he said softly. “Before you press a key.”

“Yes,” Mara answered. “Before it decides to sound.”

Another subtle tremor passed through the floor.

“They’re still playing,” he said.

“Yes.”

“But it’s not just playing.”

“No.”

He stepped into the hallway. The gas lamp along the wall flickered once, though no one had touched it.

The corridor felt longer tonight.

Not wider.

Longer.

“Did you move the door?” he asked.

“No.”

“It’s farther away.”

It wasn’t.

But it felt that way.

From below, applause rippled faintly through the house.

The vibration answered.

Mara closed her eyes.

“They’re doing it again,” she said.

“Doing what?”

“Being the same.”

Chibi frowned.

“They’re louder.”

“It’s not the loud,” she said. “It’s the matching.”

As if to prove her right, three distinct sounds from below — a laugh, a wooden tap, a violin note — aligned perfectly for half a heartbeat.

The floor responded.

Chibi stepped back.

“It’s copying them.”

“No,” Mara said quietly. “It’s agreeing.”

The gas flame leaned slightly to one side.

“There’s no wind,” he whispered.

“I know.”

He pressed his ear against the front door.

“They’re all moving at once.”

“Yes.”

“And the house likes it.”

She didn’t answer.

The wood beneath his ear vibrated faintly — not random, not chaotic.

Measured.

Three shadows crossed the frosted hallway glass.

They paused at the same angle.

Then moved apart again.

“That wasn’t normal,” Chibi said.

“No.”

“They looked the same.”

“Yes.”

“When we count together,” he said carefully, “it gets louder.”

“Yes.”

“And when everyone counts together?”

She opened her eyes.

“Then something else can hear.”

The hallway seemed to stretch for a heartbeat — just a little too long.

Then it settled.

The humming faded.

The gas lamp steadied.

The house returned to quiet.

But not entirely.

Chibi looked down the corridor one last time.

“It knows the way now,” he said.

“Yes.”

Nothing knocked.

Nothing scratched.

Nothing entered.

But the walls had learned how to answer.

And something beyond London had learned the rhythm of the house.
