We left Salzburg before the mountains were willing to loosen their grip on us.
The air tasted of woodsmoke and something older —
a memory that hadn’t finished speaking.

Mara was the last to step onto the road.
She kept looking back at the ridge above the city,
at the thin white line where the Ruprechtsweg disappears into trees
that know more names than they admit.

She whispered:
“Are you sure it’s done with us?”

No one answered.

Austria doesn’t say goodbye.
It watches.

The journey south carried the weight of everything the land had shown us —
glaciers that breathed,
bells that rang without wind,
paths that counted our footsteps
even when we didn’t.

At an old roadside shrine, Stacy left a candle.
The flame leaned sideways —
not from wind,
but as if something unseen bowed to examine it.

Caelwyn muttered that this country has a spine of stone
and a memory of fire,
and both were deciding whether we were worth remembering.

Eljara took Mara’s hand.
“Some places don’t end,” she told her.
“They follow quietly until they know you learned what they tried to teach.”

Sean didn’t speak at all.
He just touched the frost on the railcar window
as if taking one last measure of a land
that had tested him more than he would ever admit.

When we crossed the border into Switzerland,
the snow changed.
Sharper.
More deliberate.
As if this winter had its own intentions.

Mara pressed her palm to the glass.
Austria faded behind the drifting white —
but she didn’t wave.

Not because she wasn’t grateful.
But because the country wasn’t done with her,
and she knew it.

Some landscapes release you.
Others walk with you
until the next snowfall.
