The old Sanatorio Popolare di Piotta sits on the mountainside
like a patient who never recovered—
all stone ribs, hollow windows, and winter light
caught in places where no light should stay.

Caelwyn stands still for a moment,
snow gathering in his beard,
gaze fixed on the long balcony where tuberculosis patients
once watched the Alps while waiting to see
whether the next morning would still want them.

Stacy steps forward first,
boots crunching the frost on the broken tiles.
Her blond hair catches the cold air,
and for a heartbeat she looks like she belongs here—
one more ghost wandering between the arches.

“Feel that?” she whispers.

Caelwyn does.
Not cold.
Pressure.
As if the whole building inhales
every time they move.

Inside, the corridors stretch too far,
longer than the architecture should allow.
Old medical signs peel from the walls,
each word a reminder that healing
was once an act of desperation here.

Stacy touches a rusted bedframe.
A soft echo rolls through the hallway—
not sound,
memory.

“This place doesn’t forget,” she murmurs.

Caelwyn’s hand tightens around the strap of his axe.
He senses it too:
that strange Alpine stillness
that feels like someone—or something—
is taking notes.

They reach the central solarium,
glass shattered, snow drifting inside like tired feathers.
The air thickens.
Not dangerous.
Not yet.

Just aware.

Stacy breathes out a thin ribbon of fog.
“This building watched people fight for their lives,” she says.
“It knows what struggle looks like.”

Caelwyn nods once,
the mountains reflecting in his eyes.

“Then it knows we’re not done fighting either.”
