Störibrot: The Slice That Decides

Sean sets the loaf on the wooden table
inside a quiet Berchtesgaden hut,
the kind of place where winter
leans against the walls
just to listen.

The Störibrot is still warm.
Steam slips from its crust
like breath rising from old earth.

Eljara leans forward, ponytail swinging,
eyes bright—
a little too bright.

Eljara:
“So… which slice decides our luck?”

Sean doesn’t answer at first.
He turns the loaf slowly,
as if searching for a mark only he can see.

Outside, snow falls straight
—not drifting—
just dropping,
as if something above the hut
doesn’t want to lose sight of it.

Sean:
“The first slice… isn’t for us.”

Eljara raises a brow.
“For who then? Spirits? The house? The mountain?”

Sean cuts.
The knife sinks into the crust
with a sound that is not quite bread
and not quite stone.

He places the slice on a small wooden plate
near the window.

Eljara:
“That for the ancestors?”

Sean:
“For whatever walks with winter.”

The room tightens—
a quiet shiver through the beams.
Snowflakes tap the glass,
not randomly,
but in a slow, deliberate rhythm.

Eljara steps closer.
“Sean… is something out there?”

Sean looks at the window
like a man remembering a choice
he made a long time ago
when duty tore him from the thing he loved most.

“It’s Advent,” he says quietly.
“Old rules wake first.”

A low rumble rolls across the snow outside.
Not thunder.
Not wind.

A purr
massive, hungry,
felt more in the ribs than heard.

Eljara freezes.
“…Sean?”

Sean places his hand gently on her shoulder.

“Whatever it is…
it knows the first slice isn’t ours.”

The tapping on the glass stops.
Something enormous exhales
just beyond the frost.

If winter asked for its portion first…
would you give it,
or hope it doesn’t check the window twice?
