Advent in the Old World — The Season That Forgot Warmth

❄️ Advent in the Old World: The Season That Forgot Warmth

(Mythveil Chronicles – Winter Notes from the Reik, Part II)

Advent in the Old World doesn’t arrive with joy.
It arrives with weather.

Not gentle snowfall.
Not candlelit peace.
But a silence so cold
it feels like the gods stepped away from the world for a moment
and forgot to return.

The priests call it Advent.
The villagers call it something else:

The Waiting Weeks.
The time when people count their firewood,
their coins,
their remaining strength —
and hope the numbers come out in their favor.

In Altdorf, the noble districts hang wreaths on their doors,
imported greenery wrapped in bright ribbons,
holly that never grew within a hundred miles of the Reik.
Servants light candles in windows
as if light alone could bargain with winter.

But in the real Empire?
Nothing softens.

The frost thickens.
The hours shorten.
And warmth becomes a form of currency.

Down in the fisher alleys of Marienburg,
families weave lanterns out of net scraps
and bits of amber washed ashore by the tide.
Most lanterns gutter out before the second night.

In the hamlets that cling to the Middenland pines,
children place crusts of bread on their windowsills —
offerings for the Hearth Spirits they believe guard them
from wolves,
illness,
and colder things that don’t leave tracks.

No one corrects them.
Hope costs less than medicine.
And winter devours both.

Even the dwarfs feel it.
Not the chill —
but the weight.
The shift in the stone as mountains freeze from within,
the deep groan that echoes through their forges
when winter tightens its grip.

One dwarf elder carved into a tavern beam:

“If Manann brings the storms
and Ulric brings the cold…
who brings the mercy?”

No one sanded it down.

On the Reik’s frozen docks,
Old Advent Markets bloom like pale flowers:
wooden stalls selling charms against hunger,
candles blessed by priests whose faith shakes with every breath,
and ginger biscuits hard enough
to be used as improvised weapons.

Most people don’t buy the charms.
They buy the story.
The feeling that maybe, just maybe,
the gods are listening.

In the deep woods of Talabecland,
travelers whisper a winter tale:

“On the Night of the Second Candle,
the Wild Hunt chooses one soul to spare.”

Someone lost.
Someone wandering.
Someone who prayed louder than the others.

No one has ever seen it.
But no one wants to be the soul not chosen.

And above it all,
in the stone keeps along the Reik,
the nobles feast on spiced wine
and oranges brought from lands with kinder suns.
From their halls, winter seems like an aesthetic —
soft, distant, poetic.

But down here in the mud
and the wind
and the long nights that seem to breathe on their own,
Advent is not a celebration.

It’s an evaluation.

A quiet question carried on frozen air:

“In a world ruled by cold…
what remains worth waiting for?”

And some nights,
a lone patrol torch glows on a ridge road,
moving slow,
careful,
watching.

Someone beside the flame murmurs:

“Even now… someone decides who sees another spring.”

In the Old World, Advent isn’t a promise.
It’s a test.
A tally of the soul
written in frost.
