You notice it only because the silence bends wrong.
Not quiet —
strained,
like the mountain is holding its breath
and waiting for you to hear what it left behind.
The snow on the old alpine path doesn’t crunch.
It shifts,
soft as flour,
as if something walked here moments before you
and didn’t want to leave tracks.
Your lantern flickers sideways.
No wind.
Just a pressure,
low and steady,
the kind that makes old beams creak
even when nothing touches them.
Then you hear it:
A step.
Not animal.
Not human.
A wet, dragging step,
as if a heavy boot full of spoiled milk
is being lifted
and set down again
somewhere in the fog.
Another step.
Closer.
The snow sags inward,
circling you in a slow collapse
like the mountain is folding around something returning.
The fog thickens.
Not drifting —
pooling,
pressing low,
gathering into the shape
of a hut that shouldn’t be here anymore.
And then you see it:
The shadow of a man sitting on an empty milking stool,
right in the center of the ruined Alm.
No breath.
No movement.
Just the outline of someone
bent under a weight
that didn’t die with him.
His head turns toward you
with a sound like a wooden bucket tipping,
slow,
deliberate,
a hinge that forgot how to move warm.
You freeze.
Because his eyes aren’t eyes.
They’re two hollow sockets
filled with thin, trembling strands of milk-white vapor,
curling upward
like smoke from a lantern wick
that can’t decide if it’s burning.
His voice doesn’t speak forward.
It seeps sideways,
through the boards,
through the fog,
through the cold behind your ribs:
“You’re… on… my… Alm.”
The fog pulses.
The snow pulls tighter.
And the Senn stands —
a broken silhouette wrapped in tatters,
dripping with the sound of old milk
spilled on stone
centuries ago.
Each step he takes
is a memory.
A punishment.
A ritual that never ended.
You try to move,
but the ground shifts with him,
tilting under your boots
like something beneath you
is adjusting its shoulders
to rise.
Then the whisper reaches your ear —
too close,
too cold,
too tired to be anything living:
“In winter… the Alm belongs to me.
Leave…
before I remember…
what you waste.”
You run.
Through fog that follows like breath.
Across drifts that slump inward
as if hands push from below.
Past stones that rattle in old patterns
you swear you’ve heard in nightmares
you never told anyone.
At dawn, hikers find your glove on the trail.
Not torn.
Not lost.
Pressed flat,
as if someone tried to smooth the warmth out of it
one palmful at a time.
They say the Senn returns
every winter night between Martini and Georgi.
They say he walks the empty Alps,
listening for waste,
seeking the ones
who forget what winter takes.
And now he knows your scent.
You are not being hunted.
You are being weighed.
❓ If the Senn rose from the winter fog
and claimed the mountain beneath your feet…
would you stand your ground,
or run before he counts your sins?
