The Castle That Waits for Footsteps
Moosham sits where the mountains tighten—
a fortress pressed into the snow
like something trying not to wake.
Caelwyn and Stacy cross the courtyard,
boots sinking into old drifts
the wind hasn’t touched in hours.
The walls loom above them,
layered stone,
scarred by time
and the kind of winters
that remember screams.
Stacy slows.
Her breath hangs in the air,
caught—
as if the cold itself is listening.
Stacy:
“Does it feel… tense to you?”
At first, there is only wind
whispering through arrow slits.
Then—
a thud.
Not loud.
Not close.
A distant footstep
deep under the keep.
Caelwyn lifts his lantern.
The flame pulls sideways,
dragged by a draft
from a staircase
that should be sealed.
They descend.
Stone tightens around them.
Corridors narrowing.
Iron rings bolted into the wall
still cold enough
to remember hands.
Stacy wipes frost
from an old inscription—
a date carved by someone
who didn’t see spring again.
The air changes.
A low growl,
so faint it could be imagination,
vibrates through the stones.
Caelwyn:
“…Something walked down here once.”
Stacy nods,
eyes fixed on the dark ahead.
“One of the trials called it.”
Her voice barely a breath.
“Maybe more than one.”
A chain shifts—
slow, deliberate—
though no one is there to move it.
The corridor bends.
The lantern flickers.
And one of the cell doors
stands open
a finger’s width.
Not wide enough to enter.
Wide enough to invite.
Caelwyn:
“It heard us arrive.”
A heartbeat moves through the castle,
deep as the mountain beneath it—
as if Moosham
is waiting
for the next set of footsteps
to judge.
