The Long Winter · Week 2 — When Survival Becomes Tradition
Sean & Eljara
The pack offers warmth, protection and belonging. But what happens when loyalty demands that we abandon our own conscience?
In the darkness of the 41st millennium, loyalty can save lives—or destroy them. Discover a universe where duty, brotherhood and difficult choices carry lasting consequences in Black Tide: Shadow of Leviathan.
THE WOLF THAT WAS NEVER AN ALPHA
SEAN:
“I’ve always admired wolves.”
ELJARA:
“Strong, fearless creatures ruled by a mighty alpha?”
“Something like that.”
“Then you might be surprised.”
“I’m listening.”
ELJARA:
“Many wild wolf packs are families. The adults leading them are commonly the parents of the younger wolves.”
SEAN:
“So the mighty alpha is actually Dad?”
“Quite often.”
“And the terrifying second-in-command is Mum?”
“I’m sure she’ll appreciate that description.”
Sean laughs.
SEAN:
“But what about the constant fighting for dominance?”
ELJARA:
“That familiar picture was heavily influenced by observations of unrelated captive wolves. Wild wolf families often operate quite differently.”
“So their strength isn’t simply about who’s toughest.”
“No. Cooperation, relationships and shared survival matter enormously.”
Sean studies a wolf family moving through snow.
SEAN:
“Interesting. A lesson the Space Wolves might appreciate.”
ELJARA:
“Provided they remember that real wolves aren’t little soldiers wearing fur.”
“That’s an image I shall now find impossible to forget.”
BEFORE THE ARMOUR
SEAN:
“Think about Fenris.”
ELJARA:
“A world of extreme environmental dangers, violent seas and human communities accustomed to hardship.”
“And before a Fenrisian warrior becomes a Space Marine?”
“He belongs to a family, a settlement and a culture.”
Sean points towards a small hall glowing beneath a winter storm.
SEAN:
“Someone keeps the fire burning. Someone prepares the food. Someone teaches the children where the ice is dangerous.”
ELJARA:
“Survival depends on more than the strongest hunter.”
“Exactly. Yet the sagas usually celebrate the warrior.”
“Stories choose what they remember.”
“And what they forget.”
Sean studies the distant settlement.
SEAN:
“Imagine a chief refusing to retreat during a blizzard. His hunters die, and later the story celebrates their courage.”
ELJARA:
“While forgetting that retreat might have saved them.”
“And the next generation learns that retreat is always shameful.”
“Then a tragedy has become a tradition.”
He nods.
SEAN:
“That’s the danger. A story meant to preserve honour may end up preserving a mistake.”
THE PRICE OF BROTHERHOOD
SEAN:
“And then there’s becoming a Space Wolf.”
ELJARA:
“The transformation from human aspirant to Adeptus Astartes.”
“Strength, endurance, brotherhood. A place within something greater.”
“Alongside dangerous trials, profound physical changes and the possibility of failure.”
Sean studies the image of a young aspirant.
SEAN:
“And the Wulfen?”
ELJARA:
“They reveal a darker aspect of the Chapter’s genetic inheritance. The same transformation that creates extraordinary warriors can also bring monstrous changes.”
SEAN:
“Then what happens when a brother becomes frightening?”
“That’s a difficult question.”
“Does he stop belonging?”
ELJARA:
“Not simply because his condition has changed. But genuine danger may also require protective measures.”
Sean nods.
SEAN:
“Compassion doesn’t mean pretending there’s no danger.”
ELJARA:
“And danger doesn’t mean every act of cruelty becomes justified.”
He considers that.
SEAN:
“Any pack can celebrate its strongest members.”
ELJARA:
“The more revealing test is what it does when one of its members becomes vulnerable.”
TWO MEMORIES OF LOYALTY
SEAN:
“The Space Wolves have an interesting history when it comes to obedience.”
ELJARA:
“The Months of Shame?”
“Precisely. After the First War for Armageddon, Imperial authorities sought to silence or eliminate people who had survived the conflict.”
ELJARA:
“And the Space Wolves resisted the treatment of those survivors, bringing themselves into conflict with other Imperial forces.”
SEAN:
“A Chapter famous for loyalty refusing powerful orders.”
“Because loyalty to the people they believed deserved protection came into conflict with institutional obedience.”
Sean looks towards Armageddon.
SEAN:
“Sometimes protecting your brothers means telling your superiors no.”
ELJARA:
“But that’s not the whole history.”
“No. There’s also Prospero.”
The image changes to a burning city.
ELJARA:
“The Space Wolves’ assault on Prospero during the Horus Heresy involved manipulation, conflicting loyalties and devastating consequences.”
SEAN:
“The same brotherhood capable of defying an injustice was also capable of participating in catastrophe.”
ELJARA:
“Which means loyalty cannot, by itself, tell us whether a decision is right.”
Sean studies the ruins.
SEAN:
“Perhaps every pack needs somebody willing to remember the stories it would rather forget.”
THE STRANGER AT THE FIRE
The scene changes.
A Fenrisian hall stands against the storm.
Inside, families gather around a fire.
SEAN:
“Imagine a hunting party returning with an injured stranger.”
ELJARA:
“From another settlement?”
“A rival settlement. One their people have fought for generations.”
“What does the chief say?”
“That the stranger must be sent back into the snow.”
“And why?”
“Because he isn’t one of them.”
Eljara looks towards the imagined stranger.
ELJARA:
“Is he dangerous?”
“He might be. But he’s also injured and freezing.”
“So they need to assess the risk.”
“Exactly. Perhaps shelter him under guard. Treat his injuries. Find out who he is.”
Sean pauses.
SEAN:
“But the chief says that helping an enemy is betraying the pack.”
ELJARA:
“Then perhaps the chief has confused loyalty with obedience.”
“And if the hunters disagree?”
“They may have to decide which responsibility matters more.”
Sean looks at the fire.
SEAN:
“You know what bothers me about the words ‘our own’?”
ELJARA:
“What?”
“They can mean the people we promise never to abandon.”
“And?”
“They can also become an excuse to abandon everybody else.”
THE QUESTION WE LEAVE OPEN
ELJARA:
“We began with wolves. Real wolf families show us that cooperation can matter more than the popular fantasy of dominance.”
SEAN:
“And Fenris shows us something more complicated. Brotherhood gives people courage, identity and a reason to endure.”
ELJARA:
“But shared identity can also create pressure to conform.”
“Tradition can preserve wisdom.”
“Or prevent people from recognising old mistakes.”
“Loyalty can inspire sacrifice.”
“Or demand it from people who should never have been asked.”
Outside the hall, the snow keeps falling.
Sean looks towards the fire.
SEAN:
“Perhaps the strongest pack isn’t the one where nobody ever disagrees.”
ELJARA:
“Then what makes it strong?”
“One where people can tell their brothers the truth—even when that truth is unwelcome.”
Eljara considers this.
ELJARA:
“And where protecting the group doesn’t automatically mean abandoning everyone outside it.”
Sean turns towards us.
SEAN:
“If the people you loved demanded something you believed was wrong, would you remain loyal to them?”
Eljara adds:
ELJARA:
“And if refusing meant losing your place beside the fire, would you still have the courage to say no?”
