MARA:
“I think we’ve found another problem.”
CHIBI:
“We’re very good at those.”
MARA:
“If the fire remembers some higher state…”
CHIBI:
“…it wants to go home.”
MARA:
“But what happens to us when it gets there?”
Chibi looks at the wooden blocks between them.
CHIBI:
“What do you mean?”
MARA:
“If everything becomes whole again…”
She takes two separate blocks and puts them together.
MARA:
“…do we stop being separate?”
CHIBI:
“Oh.”
MARA:
“If there’s only one thing, there’s no you and me.”
CHIBI:
“No friendship.”
MARA:
“No choosing someone.”
CHIBI:
“No missing them.”
MARA:
“No forgiving them.”
CHIBI:
“No loving them.”
They both go quiet.
CHIBI:
“Then maybe being separate isn’t a mistake.”
MARA:
“Maybe it’s how we experience things that wholeness couldn’t.”
CHIBI:
“Stories.”
MARA:
“Relationships.”
CHIBI:
“Choices.”
MARA:
“Love.”
Chibi takes one block.
CHIBI:
“Then going home can’t mean becoming what we were before.”
MARA:
“No.”
CHIBI:
“Because we’ve changed.”
MARA:
“And maybe that’s the point.”
CHIBI:
“We return changed.”
Mara nods.
MARA:
“Whatever the fire is reaching for, maybe it doesn’t want to erase the journey.”
CHIBI:
“It wants to bring it home.”
MARA:
“The things we learned.”
CHIBI:
“The people we loved.”
MARA:
“The choices we made.”
CHIBI:
“Even the mistakes?”
MARA:
“Especially those.”
Chibi starts rebuilding the blocks.
Not the old tower.
Something new.
CHIBI:
“Then the highest state isn’t becoming everything.”
MARA:
“Maybe not.”
CHIBI:
“Maybe it’s being yourself without being alone.”
Mara looks at him.
MARA:
“That was annoyingly good.”
CHIBI:
“I know.”
She picks up the final block.
MARA:
“But then we have one last problem.”
CHIBI:
“Of course we do.”
MARA:
“To become more, you have to change.”
CHIBI:
“Yes.”
MARA:
“But if you change enough…”
She places the block into the new structure.
MARA:
“…when do you stop being you?”
Chibi looks at what they have built.
Then towards us.
CHIBI:
“Maybe that’s why the fire remembers.”
MARA:
“So we can change without forgetting why we started.”
They turn towards us.
MARA:
“If you could become wiser…”
CHIBI:
“…stronger…”
MARA:
“…more aware…”
CHIBI:
“…closer to whatever your highest self could be…”
MARA:
“…but you had to change everything you are to get there…”
CHIBI:
“…would the person who arrived still be you?”
QUESTION TO THE READER:
How much of yourself would you be willing to change in order to become more — before becoming more started to feel like becoming someone else?

Game: World of Darkness
Campaign: Mythveil Chronicles
Theme: Month 8 · Inner Fire · Week 4 · The Fire That Comes Home
Perhaps the fire remembers a higher state.
But returning does not have to mean becoming what we once were.
The vampire changes.
The mage seeks Ascension.
The wraith seeks Transcendence.
The changeling reaches towards the Dreaming.
The Garou fights for balance.
Every path promises transformation.
But if transformation changes everything about you, one question remains:
Who arrives at the end?

MYTHVEIL NOTE
“The Fire That Comes Home” is a Mythveil Chronicles interpretive framework. Its comparison of transformation, identity, Ascension, Transcendence, the Dreaming and other metaphysical ideas across World of Darkness game lines is philosophical synthesis, not an official unified World of Darkness cosmology.
Our discussion is written with deep respect for the writers, designers, artists, developers and communities — from the original White Wolf era to the creators carrying the World of Darkness forward today — whose work made these questions possible.
