A crowd gathers outside a small house.
“They say she’s a witch.”
“She talks to herself.”
“Strange lights come from her windows.”
Nobody has spoken to her.
Nobody has gone inside.
Mara looks at the house.
Flowers bloom beneath every window.
An orange cat sleeps on the porch.
Nothing feels frightening.
Mara: Has anyone talked to her?
Silence.
Finally someone answers:
“You don’t talk to witches.”
Later that afternoon,
Mara quietly knocks on the door.
An elderly woman opens it with a warm smile.
Inside the little house…
Books.
Lavender.
Drying herbs.
A kettle whistles softly.
Mrs. Whitmore pours tea.
Mrs. Whitmore: They weren’t always afraid.
A pause.
“They became afraid…”
“…after people started disappearing.”
“Someone needed a reason.”
That evening,
Mara and Chibi walk to the abandoned mine outside town.
Fresh truck tracks.
Fresh footprints.
Someone is still going underground.
Mara kneels beside the entrance.
Mara: They said nobody comes here.
Deep below…
Something heavy moves against ancient stone.
Slowly.
Patiently.
They return to town.
The neighbors are still watching Mrs. Whitmore’s house.
Nobody is watching the mine.
Mara looks from the lonely old woman…
…to the distant hills.
Mara: Why are they afraid of her…
“…instead of that?”
Chibi quietly answers:
“Because she can answer the door.”
A long silence.
“The real monsters…”
“…usually don’t.”
