Pulp Cthulhu Noir July — The Sweet Smoke

Mara: Why are they candy?

She stands in front of the corner store.

Comic books.

Bubble gum.

Chocolate bars.

And right beside them…

Candy cigarettes.

Chibi picks up the small package.

Mara: Why would children want cigarettes?

Chibi looks at the box.

Chibi: They don’t.

A pause.

Chibi: They want to be grown-ups.

Outside, a father lights a cigarette.

His little son proudly imitates him…

…using a candy cigarette.

The father smiles.

Neither notices.

Mara watches them.

Mara: Is pretending how you become an adult?

Chibi thinks for a moment.

Chibi: Sometimes.

They walk toward the playground.

Children aren’t playing pirates.

They’re not playing explorers.

One pretends to be a television salesman.

Another pretends to drive a brand-new car.

Another proudly “smokes” his candy cigarette.

Nobody told them to play this game.

They simply learned it.

Mara quietly opens the candy cigarette box.

One by one…

She snaps every candy stick in half.

The sugar falls into the grass.

Mara: Now they can’t pretend anymore.

Chibi smiles gently.

Then slowly shakes his head.

Chibi: They still can.

Mara looks confused.

Chibi points toward the glowing billboard across the street.

Then toward the television shining through a nearby living-room window.

Finally he whispers:

Chibi:

“You don’t need the candy…

“…once you believe the story.”

The summer evening settles over Tomorrow’s America.

The radios keep singing.

The advertisements keep smiling.

The children keep pretending.

And one day…

They won’t remember

where the game began.

🜍 Week 2 — The Sweet Smoke
🜍 The first story we believe is rarely the one we choose.

If you remember what this felt like —
you already know the game.

Not the candy cigarette.

Not the advertisement.

The quiet wish to become someone else.

Step back into it.

Or ask yourself who first taught us what “grown up” was supposed to look like.
