Sean: What are they buying?

Eljara looks toward the new billboard.

A smiling cowboy.

A cigarette.

A perfect sunset.

Below it:

A WAY OF LIFE.

Sean watches people stop to look.

Sean: It’s just tobacco.

Eljara quietly shakes her head.

Eljara: Is it?

A father lights a cigarette outside the diner.

His young son proudly pretends to smoke…

…using a candy cigarette.

Sean watches them disappear down the sidewalk.

Sean: He’s copying his father.

Eljara looks at the advertisement.

Eljara: No.

A pause.

Eljara: He’s copying the story they sold his father.

Later they enter a small advertising agency.

Happy families cover every wall.

Perfect kitchens.

Perfect smiles.

Perfect futures.

Sean turns to a young copywriter.

Sean: What do you sell?

The man smiles proudly.

Copywriter: Hope.

Sean waits.

Copywriter: Confidence.

Success.

Belonging.

Sean quietly looks around the room.

Sean: And the products?

The copywriter laughs.

Copywriter: Those sell themselves.

Silence.

Outside,

another billboard rises above Main Street.

Another promise.

Another smiling future.

Sean: When did advertisements become sermons?

Eljara watches the sunlight catch the painted smile.

Then quietly says:

Eljara: About the same time…

“…people stopped asking who was writing them.”

The town keeps buying.

The radios keep singing.

The billboards keep preaching.

And almost nobody notices

that the product was never the point.
