Mara: Why are they whispering?
The adults stop talking whenever someone walks past.
Curtains move.
Newspapers fold shut.
Front doors close a little earlier every evening.
Mara: They weren’t like this before.
Chibi shakes his head.
Last summer the neighborhood belonged to everyone.
Children ran from house to house.
Neighbors shared lemonade on front porches.
Nobody locked anything.
Now everyone watches.
Tommy walks toward them.
He glances over his shoulder before speaking.
Tommy: My dad says your dad asks too many questions.
Silence.
Tommy walks away.
Not because he wants to.
Because someone is watching.
Mara stares after him.
Mara: What did we do?
Chibi looks at the empty sidewalk.
Chibi: Nothing.
The children leave the town behind and follow the familiar path to the old orchard.
The trees still give fruit freely.
The creek still sings.
The wind still moves through the branches.
Nothing here asks:
Who are you?
What do you believe?
Whose side are you on?
An apple falls into the grass.
Mara picks it up.
Breaks it in half.
Hands the larger piece to Chibi.
He smiles.
The first genuine smile all afternoon.
For a moment everything feels the way summer used to feel.
Warm.
Simple.
Safe.
Far away, another rumor begins.
Another whisper.
Another accusation.
The orchard cannot stop it.
Only people can.
Mara looks back toward town.
Mara: Will it always be like this?
A long silence.
Chibi looks at the apple in his hands.
Then toward the distant rooftops.
Finally:
Chibi: No.
Mara smiles.
Chibi smiles too.
Then quietly:
Chibi: It ends…
A pause.
“…when somebody remembers to trust first.”
The sun slips behind the hills.
The town falls into shadow.
The orchard remains golden just a little longer.
And somewhere beyond the fear,
something ancient waits.
Not for war.
Not for hatred.
Only for the moment
people forget each other again.

🜍 Week 4 — The Last Secret
🜍 Fear divides. Trust remembers.
If you remember what this felt like —
you already know the choice.
The whisper.
The closed door.
The moment a friend became someone to question.
Step back into it.
Or remember the one thing fear can never understand.
