THE TRIAL OF FIRE Warhammer 40,000

The first crusade fleet departed at dawn.

The second before noon.

The third before sunset.

By midnight the orbital docks looked empty.

Not because there were fewer ships.

Because there were too many.

Every vessel that could fly was leaving.

Pilgrim fleets.

War fleets.

Martyr fleets.

All moving toward different destinations.

All believing they were answering the same call.

Eljara:
They really believe it.

Sean watched another fleet disappear into the Warp.

Sean:
Yeah.

A pause.

Sean:
That’s what scares me.

The answer surprised her.

Eljara:
You don’t trust faith?

Sean laughed softly.

Sean:
Faith isn’t the problem.

A pause.

Sean:
Faith can carry people through impossible things.

Another.

Sean:
The problem is what happens next.

Below them, thousands cheered as another crusade vessel launched.

People giving sons.

Daughters.

Lovers.

Friends.

Everything.

Willingly.

Eljara:
You think they’re making a mistake.

Sean shook his head.

Sean:
No.

Eljara:
Then what’s wrong?

Sean watched the crowds.

The devotion.

The certainty.

The certainty bothered him most.

Sean:
Nothing.

A pause.

Sean:
Yet.

The void beyond the station shimmered.

Almost invisible.

As though reality itself had begun breathing differently.

Eljara:
You’ve noticed it too.

Sean nodded.

Everyone had.

Nobody talked about it.

But everyone felt it.

Something was different.

Not visible.

Present.

Like standing near something enormous in the dark.

Eljara:
Do you think it’s him?

The question lingered.

Dangerous.

Sacred.

Sean:
Maybe.

Eljara sighed.

Eljara:
Everyone keeps saying maybe.

Sean smiled.

Sean:
Because everyone is terrified of saying yes.

Another fleet departed.

Its engines illuminated the void.

Golden.

Almost beautiful.

Sean:
Imagine you’re a warrior.

Eljara:
Okay.

Sean:
You suddenly feel stronger than you’ve ever felt.

A pause.

Sean:
Braver.

Another.

Sean:
More certain.

Sean:
You believe nothing can stop you.

Eljara:
That sounds useful.

Sean:
It is.

A pause.

Sean:
Until somebody whispers that stopping was never necessary.

Silence.

Sean:
Then courage becomes rage.

For an instant the void flickered red.

Gone immediately.

Sean:
Imagine you’re a scholar.

A pause.

Sean:
You suddenly understand things.

Connections.

Patterns.

Possibilities.

Sean:
You believe you’re seeing truth.

The darkness flickered blue.

Barely visible.

Sean:
Then somebody whispers that there are deeper truths waiting.

Another pause.

Sean:
Just one more question.

The blue vanished.

Sean:
Then wisdom becomes obsession.

Green flickered.

Then purple.

Brief.

Almost imagined.

Sean:
A healer wants to save everyone.

Sean:
A saint wants to love everyone.

A pause.

Sean:
Every virtue wants to become perfect.

Silence.

Sean:
That’s where the danger begins.

The cheering below grew louder.

Another fleet.

Another crusade.

Another army.

The entire Imperium seemed to be rising at once.

Eljara:
You think Chaos is corrupting them.

Sean stared into the void.

Long enough that she thought he hadn’t heard.

Finally—

Sean:
No.

The answer hit harder than expected.

Eljara:
No?

Sean shook his head.

Slowly.

Sean:
They’re corrupting themselves.

Silence.

The fleets continued departing.

The bells continued ringing.

Hope continued spreading.

Across worlds.

Across sectors.

Across the galaxy.

Sean:
Chaos doesn’t create the crack.

A pause.

Sean:
It finds it.

Another.

Sean:
And right now—

He looked down at the billions preparing for war.

At the billions trying to become more than they were yesterday.

At the billions reaching toward something greater.

His voice dropped to a whisper.

Sean:
Humanity has never wanted to be greater than it does right now.

The void trembled.

Not visibly.

Not physically.

Spiritually.

As though something immense had turned its attention toward the galaxy.

Not arriving.

Not yet.

Only watching.

Only waiting.

And somewhere in that waiting—

something smiled.

Not because humanity was failing.

But because humanity was trying so very hard to succeed.
