Sean
Do you believe someone can inherit a debt they never created?
Eljara
That happens constantly.
Children inherit consequences from parents.
Nations inherit consequences from rulers.
Institutions inherit consequences from founders.
Sean
Interesting.
Because nobody likes calling it inheritance.
Eljara
What do they call it?
Sean
History.
(Silence.)
Eljara
You think history is accumulated debt.
Sean
Partially.
Every civilization tells stories about its achievements.
Far fewer tell stories about their invoices.
Eljara
Invoices.
Sean
The costs.
The sacrifices.
The things spent to create the achievement.
(They pass a monument celebrating imperial expansion.)
Sean
Every empire has monuments.
Very few have receipts.
(A faint smile.)
Eljara
That may be the most depressing thing you’ve said all month.
Sean
Only because it’s true.
(A pause.)
Eljara
Then what happens?
Sean
People inherit the benefits.
Without understanding the cost.
Eljara
And eventually the cost becomes invisible.
Sean
Yes.
Invisible things are easy to mistake for nonexistent things.
(That lands heavily.)
Eljara
…
Sean
A child inherits a house without knowing who built it.
A nation inherits prosperity without remembering who paid for it.
A civilization inherits stability without understanding what was sacrificed to create it.
Eljara
Then why do people become defensive whenever someone asks where things came from?
Sean
Because gratitude creates obligation.
(Silence.)
Eljara
If something was given…
Sean
Then someone gave it.
Eljara
And if someone gave it…
Sean
Then perhaps something is owed.
(The city seems quieter now.)
Eljara
The people who paid are gone.
The kings are dead.
The workers are dead.
The generations are dead.
Why should their sacrifice still matter?
(Sean stops walking.)
Sean
Because the bridge still stands.
The road still exists.
The city still prospers.
The benefit remains.
(A long pause.)
Eljara
Then perhaps the debt isn’t payment.
Sean
No?
Eljara
Memory.
(Sean looks at her.)
Eljara
Not guilt.
Not punishment.
Not repayment.
Eljara
Memory.
The obligation is remembering what made us possible.
(A silence.)
Sean
That may be the wisest thing you’ve said all month.
Eljara
Thank you.
(She watches the last summer banners move above the street.)
Sean
And the Ancient Ones?
Eljara
If they are memory…
(A pause.)
Eljara
Then they are not waiting for payment.
They are waiting to see whether we remember.
